Saudi woman to be lashed
#31
Lashing a guy for being a woman driving would have been very odd.
Much as punishments like lashings, stonings and the like are to us barbaric, if they are applied equally to all then maybe you can argue there is less of a case for international condemnation, but in this case the laws are also based on gender or race or ethnicity too.

How many ways are there to interpret the word?
jus·ti·fy verb \ˈjəs-tə-ˌfī\
jus·ti·fiedjus·ti·fy·ing
Definition of JUSTIFY
transitive verb
1
a : to prove or show to be just, right, or reasonable
In your opinion, was is RIGHT that economic sanctions were imposed on South Africa in an attempt (sucessful or otherwise) to bring an end to the unjust race based apartheid system?
Im not a lawyer, so Im not sure if that is worded in a sufficiently water tight manner to prevent anyone wriggling out of answering it, but its the closest I can get to a yes/no question without spending $500

I don't believe in economic sanctions as, normally, they affect the citizens rather than those one is attempting to persuade.

I have stated that I am against apartheid and, it appears to me that the thrust of why I am being asked to be so specific is that; if I don't believe they were appropriate, I must be for apartheid, such a position is without merit. I fail to see why my opinion of whether they were justified or not is relevant.

I have tried to explain my opinion but, it would appear, I have not been able to do so to the satisfaction of him wot posed the question. I don't understand what else I can say that will be satisfactory.

I thought it a no too, and thats a fair enough view point, shared by MrsT among others IIR. If thats the case (still cant get a yes or no answer, I tried my best), it seems unlikely that he is going to agree with me that economic sanctions could be used effectively as a tool to promote equality elsewhere, against other oppressive regimes.
On the other hand Ive seen many black South Africans express the view that sanctions were instrumental in helping bring down apartheid if only because it gave those struggling against the regime some tangible evidence that the rest of the outside world did care and was on their side, and that gave them the strength to carry on, regardless of the economic impact.

Hopefully it was not from the movie "district 9", because you do realize it's not real?
