Thought provoking - "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey - fab book a couple of years ago was on Oprah Whinfrey show.

The novel portrays the lives of natives and immigrants in northern Ontario in the 1860s. It is cold and harsh - and a murder changes everything.

On Beauty - by Zadie Smith - another brilliant set of characters - again, not my usual read (bought for me - I usually do espionage/thriller types) - rather 'intellectual' in places, ie, set in a university back drop - but well worth the time invested in it. The kind of book I might even read again - which I rarely do - 7 out of 10

How about The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. or My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult, both current favourites of mine.
