Default reasonable request- job posting

I just happen to be browsing the latest job offering on Charity Village.

One caught my eye. an events coordinator for the Toronto Vegetarian Association.

As well as the usual list of requirements for the job, this one got me thinking

Must follow a vegetarian diet (free of meat, fish and poultry or the flesh of any animal).

Now I can accept that you are organising events that are for vegetarians and that serving up a steak would probably be considered quite tactless. I can even accept that you wouldn't be able to bring your ham sarnies into work, but insisting that you are a total vegetarian?

What would they do if they catch you eating bacon on your day off? fire you?

I wonder how that requirement would stand up in a court?

I don't know the answer.

Er, pigs are omnivores....

I suspect this condition would be unenforcible in law, but if they had any sense they would just fire you for any of the thousands of casual reasons that people lose jobs here for ( ie "its just not working out") rather than state its because you are a meatatarian.

Could they be an exempted employer? Job advertised via Charity Village, whatever that is.

TVA appears to be a Charitable organisation.

this is more of an idle curiosity kind of thing. I have visions of random meat testing, you know like some jobs require random drug tests
I have no intention of applying.

What about one's personal integrity. You would probably need to lie to get the job. I think that's a fireable offence in itself. It would be the same as working in say, an accounting role when on your application you "ticked" no to the question "have you ever been convicted of a criminal offence" when, in fact you had.

My wife was a vegetarian for a long while, but once pregnant the siren call of chilli and bacon was too strong to resist, so it could be an applicant applies in good faith, but goes to the dark side after being hired.

Obviously its supposed to be beholden upon an employer to try and help an errant employee with their addiction / gambling/ bacon problems, but Im sure that does not always happen...

What about "Vegetarians need not apply" for a job with some sort of meat organisation?

Here's a good slogan for such advertising....you can't beat meat.

That does not surprise me.

I've known several fairly extreme veggies/vegans that fell off the wagon from time to time.

I loathe hypocrisy.

I'm sorry but no. in no way do those two things equate to each other.
