Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
So if a move back home is feasible then maybe do it? Plan it, put pictures on the fridge so every time you go to get something out you are reminded of your favorite spots back home.
But make it happen. So what if it take two years instead of one, you’d be working towards it.
When we made thr move to Canada there were a lot of people who said “I wish I could do it”. I said to them and I’ll say to you... stop dreaming and make it happen.
If you can’t afford to go back with all your stuff then sell. It’s just stuff.
Focus on what you can do and not what you can’t.
(Foot note to say that this is all coming from a place of caring not frustration).
Its something we are thinking about and looking into longer term. Not something that can be done quickly as there are things to deal with such as immigration for my other half, saving the funds necessary to secure housing and live off of while we find jobs, possibly be able to stay with my mom very short term, but she lives in a 55+ community so technically she is only allowed under 55's for 7 days max, but they don't seem super strict on the rules.
My step sister and her 2 kids live with my dad and step mom, so can't stay there, doubtful she will move anytime soon as she doesn't have the funds to live on her own, San Diego region is not cheap, comparable to Vancouver for renting housing, cheaper to own though, can own a house for 500,000-600,000k which obviously isn't within our abilities but it is cheaper vs Vancouver...lol
Palm Springs area is cheaper so might make more sense to go there.
It's something we are working on trying to build a plan that will work.

Service Canada sure does take their sweet time when it comes to processing EI claims, good thing we have disability, but man if someone could no longer work, they could end up homeless before a claim is decided on.
I won't receive any funds, but the province required me to apply for EI so they can reduce disability amount if I get approved, but at this rate, I'll be working again before EI makes a decision.
33 days so far, and just says under review still.

Interestingly, if you are in receipt of EI through loss of your job... and if you then become incapacitated and unable to work (or seek work) for at least 4 weeks, with a doctors / specialists letter to state the same, you can then get 'sickness benefit' and your EI is extended by the same amount of time!

I don't really care how long it takes, but the province is eager to know if they can reduce disability to they have been pestering me.

Thanks. All I could find is that they strive to have it all done within 28 days, and their call center wasn't any help, they just regurgitate what it says online. The process really should be quicker, if someone found themselves out of work suddenly, taking this long could mean having a place to live or being homeless.

I guess my application ended up in the 20% that they don't meet the 28 day time line.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I took some assessment tests for a school, okay with English, but I did horrendous on the math, could not even begin to start answering a problem as I had no idea where to start...Way beyond any math I ever learned in school.
I am going to try and upgrade in the fall, however I don't have high hopes as each time I have tried to tackle math, I have not succeed, if I don't this time, I am not going to try again.
I wish there was some sort of job I could do that paid well and didn't require schooling/training because everything more or less requires math at some level.

I was never any good at math either, lol.
Apparently, "janitor" is a job where no math is required and can be well paid .. and if you can get into a school then it's pretty secure too (school janitor / asst pay around $20 an hour in BC).
Have you ever thought of an apartment building superintendent position (or assistant) whilst the salary isn't that great, there's usually a free 2 bed apartment included. Just a thought
Hope it goes well!

I did apply to rail road jobs as they seem to pay well, never do well on the assessment test though, so never get to an interview stage. A lot of mechanical reasoning stuff so apparently I don't have good mechanical reasoning...lol.
Thought since I like trains that it might be an interesting job, and pay seems decent. Have had a few co-workers who have left my company to go work for the rail road.
Just trying to obtain something that is more transferable skill wise so we can try and move somewhere lower housing cost and maybe buy someday, even if made 50k a year that is not enough to make Vancouver work but would be not a bad wage in some other areas of BC.
I would go to the US for school and take the aquarium science degree offered in Oregon, would love to work at an aquarium. The requirements some I can meet but others I can't specifically having a high GPA and having 2 academic references, they don't have an adult entry stream, and when I talked to them 3 years ago, average GPA on acceptance was 3.7
My high school GPA was 2.1 or 2.2 and well it was 21 years ago so its not acceptable anyhow, I would need a few years of college under my belt, I really don't think I could get a high GPA, I am a C student, solid C student, got a spattering of A's in BS classes but any serious class, C's and difficult classes like math, never passed, I never passed a math class from grade 7 to 12.
I wish I knew why my brain can't remember material well, and why I don't do well in school, sure wasn't from a lack of trying, not sure I could have tried any harder.

Janitor seems to vary quite a lot, anywhere from min wage to 50k a year, depending on who is employing you, government's tend to pay more, but difficult to get. I do check on Vancouver School board job site, and other government job sites, and do apply for some of the jobs, I have not gotten interviews but I do apply. School board currently only has skilled jobs, but if anyone is a teacher they seem to be hiring at the moment, I hear there is a shortage of teachers, wage is too low to live in Vancouver comfortably.
