Where DOES the North begin? The North/South divide is under scrutiny again - BBC Three

Based on the first map shown I grew up on the north/not north line which could explain a lot about me. I love the quote that the north is 'not a place but a state of mind.' Watching that video makes me weep for the future and the appalling lack of just basic general knowledge. We all laugh at americans and their lack of knowledge about basic geography/world events but this video isn't far off.

For the first time in over 10 years I paid off a full balance of my credit card...and then 2 days later used it again for the first in a series of payments expected to be around $5k for dental treatment. 3 Root canals.

that is a singularly unhelpful and spiteful contribution to this thread. I'm sure you think you're terribly clever, but you continue to come across on here as an insufferable knob.

Three root canals would be US$1,050 with my orthodontist in Los Algadonis, Mexico. You could have a holiday and still save a ton of money. My dentist in NS had to say that the work was excellent. I have been going to the same dental folks down here for over 10 years with no problems. My dental benefit package payed 100% of each job because it was less then their threshold of 80% of what they pay in Canada.

Yes, I've heard that about Mexico. I remember something similar in the UK about Poland and Czech Republic too.

Just been looking at an article on that place to see where it is. Quite convenient if you're "a stone's throw away" in Arizona ;)

They're being done apart and two of them require something more specialist than usual (2 for $3500 1 @ $1000) so maybe two would be more than $350 US each.

Out of curiosity I checked flights - about $1000CAD return. Convert the $1050 US to CAD = $1400, so $2400. Maybe extra for the 'complicated' two and then accommodation/other costs over a couple of weeks.

Might not be too much difference overall other than seeing a new part of the world that doesn't really appeal.

I suppose I could always be kidnapped and have my teeth removed one at a time and sent back with the ransom notes.

The North starts at Yorkshire and Lancashire. I've never been too sure about Derbyshire.

I'd go for Leicestershire, none of this Midlands rubbish.

That's what people from the north always say. I grew up knowing it to be Watford, actual Watford, and was astonished when Elton John bought a football team so far out into the wilderness.

As a small child, I always thought t’South started after Huddersfield, then Sheffield, possibly, if one stretches a point ;)

Then I heard the alternative view which was that the North starts at...

In my mind, the edge of the South approximately follows the northern borders of Glos, Oxon, Bucks, Beds, cuts across the middle of Cambs, to the Norfolk/Suffolk boundary.

Beyond that, "Here Be Dragons."

I'd agree with that for the most part. But you have to exclude Manchester which is clearly not in the North.

That's about right, Apart from the Dragons. Solihull, Birmingham, Leicester and the rest are clearly in the Midlands. Whatever they are.

But really, who cares? Isn't it supposed to be a country rather than waring regions?

Where else in the world we have such a stupid debate?

And why?

Norfolk is in the North? Well, I do have a whippet.
