Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
US related but they don't have a random thread and I found this interesting, (the article is from 2018 and accurate as of 2018)
" John Tyler was the first vice president elevated to the presidency on the death of the chief executive and the first president to marry in the White House. Nearly 175 years later, two of his grandchildren are still around." https://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-two...e-still-alive/ |

Interesting article.
The map of trees is interesting. Lack of tress on the east side especially DTES leads to warmer surface temps. When I have to go to the west end of downtown or the west side of the city, all the trees are so nice, and wish we had that kind of tree coverage on the east side. We had a nice tree in front of our window, it goes up to the 3rd floor, but it never came back this spring, died over the winter. Noticeable difference in the comfort of the apartment without this tree this year. Now if only the city would come and do something about it. (the city has been made aware of it by more than one resident.) https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...lViEYWojst2gBM My experience in this neighbourhood where we have LOTS of street trees is that you have to be patient. First, the City Arborist has got to come and determine that the tree really is dead, and not just need severe pruning. Second, they seem to do removal of trees at certain times of the years ....... "Immediately' would be for a tree in imminent danger of falling and injuring someone. Third, the city contracts one or more private companies to actually chop the trees down. They, of course, also have their own clients. It might well be fall before they come and cut your tree down. The stump will then be left there for a time before another crew come and dig it up. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Wont be surprised if it goes another winter before its gone ha ha
I am just bummed it died, it was such a nice tree in summer, really kept the apartment cooler as it blocked almost all the sun.

Sobeys does some very nice chocolate eclairs. Real cream but it's icing on the top and too much of it.
Today I tried an independent store I've never been to before. Among their very nice looking cakes were eclairs that have real chocolate on top. I was so excited I didn't think to check it was real cream. I'll find out later. If it's not, I'll put some Devon cream in. |

If it is any consolation, they have to replace any tree that has had to be removed. The caveat here being that it is then up to the people living around there to keep the tree watered both while it gets established and for several years afterward. We had a cherry tree removed from by our house about 5 years ago. The new tree came with a label tied around it asking "Please water me' . It flowered last year for the first time, but it is a different variety from the old (ca 60 years old) up and down the street. For one thing, it has white flowers and the others are all pinky-red. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Using google street view which goes back to 2009, this tree was a small sapling in 2009, so probably planted around that time, so 10 years ago. The July 2018 and October 2018 google street view the tree was still living, although October it was losing its leaves.
Looking at the 2009 photos it was surrounded by more grass and dirt the entire length of the street. This building construction started in 2013 and by the next google street photo in 2016 when the building was completed, the side walk has been widened considerably eating up most of the grassy space and dirt. The tree currently sits in a square of dirt about 4 feet L x 2 feet W. So was here for at least 10 years and grew considerably in those 10 years.

I hate when I get a prescription that isn't covered by pharmacare.
For one of the prescriptions the filling fee is almost the cost of the drug itself. $10 filling fee for a $13.83 medication. $20 in filling fees and $40 of medications, $60 in total. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Pretty cool video, taken at Jack Wattley discus. They have been breeding discus fish for a long time, although Jack died last fall at 96.
Must be an interesting job these fish breeders. Corey who made the video owns a fish store in WA state, people will drive from BC to his store for fish. Discus have always been my dream fish, ever since I was young. |

I've just bought a tee shirt that needs ironing. That can't be right?

I have a couple that say the same. I however never iron them, they always look fine out of the dryer to me.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
We iron very little .............we don't have a dryer, never have had one since we bought the house. Instead we have drying lines strung up in the laundry area in the basement and everything is hung to dry. shirts and blouses are put onto hangers, given a good shake and then hung.
Everything turns out fine. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Had to order a small replacement part for an item we have from the US as I couldn't find anywhere in Canada that sells it. Ordered from a place in Miami and shipping it to Pt. Roberts, Washington so I can get it quicker. Amazing how fast the USPS is, item picked up Saturday at 2pm and is scheduled for delivery in Pt. Roberts on Monday and only $3.95 in shipping charges.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
This has happened before at airlines and boils down to people not doing their job to ensure the plane is empty before closing, however not sure how people sleep through all this.
Everywhere I have worked, the flight attendants are to do a sweep through the aircraft back to front, then before we as ground crew closed the plane assuming it wasn't being groomed first, also did a sweep back to front to ensure nobody was on-board before closing and sealing the doors. https://www.npr.org/2019/06/21/73493..._medium=social |

Who are you? You weren't sitting next to me when I nodded off. And what's that desert/canyon/sea doing down there? |

I'm up quite late tonight, have been doing some cooking. I've just sat down for a cuppa before bed, and a mouse has appeared out of nowhere and is now hiding behind the sideboard :scaredhair:
I have to walk past the sideboard to get to the bedroom, so it looks like I'll be sleeping in this chair tonight. |

No, that wouldn't be worse at least not for me! Being of a somewhat hysterical mindset when it comes to Things Going Wrong With Planes, I'd have probably woken up and thought the plane had crashed and I was trapped at the bottom of the ocean. In the dark. All alone. *shudder*

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
A comment on reddit about high rent costs in Winnipeg amused me, someone posted how a decent apartment would run $1,200 a month, then another posted saying their rent is insane for their 3bed 2 bath house at $1,800 a month, these folks have obviously never lived in Vancouver....lol
Last I looked both Winnipeg and Edmonton had higher or close to same median income as Vancouver does. |

Man (large) approaches and says "I think you're in my seat", I quadruple checked my boarding pass and replied "I think not, baby puppy" showing my boarding pass. Your man looks at my boarding pass and says "Fine, 'cept that this plane goes to Zurich, not Geneva". Two flights departing 5 minutes apart, (both running late) adjoining departure gates, I ended up boarding the wrong one... :o Spoiler:

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Heard some yelling outside someone was standing in front a bus and wouldn't let the bus go, went on long enough for 5 other buses to get backed up and not able to move. They are trolley buses and cannot pass one another so if one gets delayed, they tend to bunch up so now there are 5 buses on the same route following each other in a group. (pass in the sense a non-trolley bus can, a trolley bus can pass another, but requires the bus to be disconnected from the wires, pass, then connected back to the wires, so in actual practice day to day operations they don't pass one another.)
Crazy neighborhood, never know whats gonna happen day to day. |

After throwing magazines at the spot where I last saw the bloody thing, with no result, I finally worked up the courage to dash to the bedroom. Just in case Scouse was awake  I lay there muttering about a moose being loose in the hoose. Which woke him up  He got up, as I knew he would. I lay in bed laughing for the next five minutes, couldn't help it because every light in the place was switched on and there was much banging, thumping and crashing. I thought he'd found the mouse and was chasing it, but when he came back to bed he said he was just moving furniture looking for it  He fixed the problem today, there is a small gap either side of our garage door where they can get in, and some sort of automatic locking strip at the bottom on the internal door from garage to house wasn't engaging. No more gaps, no more mice, hopefully. |

I have a mouse in the house, and have set out a couple of traps.

A house I lived in a few years ago was riddled with the things.. despite snap traps, cage traps... and even poison / sticky traps (which I hate - why make them suffer...) the little sods wouldn't be got rid of.. the sad thing was some were obviously escaped domesticated mice as they were multi coloured, not a wild mouse colour. I like mice, but not what they drop or the diseases they carry :( |
