Maybe you should Google 'The Duke of Edinburgh's Award' and then come back and tell us what a waste of space he is. How all those millions of kids spread over 10+ countries were better off staying at home instead of volunteering or gaining new skills.

Isnt the Crown Estate owned by the Queen ? Two years ago Guardian reported the value of those holdings alone at 11.5 billion, though Queen as I understand it keeps only 15% of revenue. Then they are assets held outright like Balmoral Castle- how would one value such assets ? Plus if I remember whales within three miles of the shore.

Those properties that the Queen does own outright were bought by her predecessors for private family use; this is why she holidays in Balmoral during the summer and Sandringham during the winter, as those are the family's private homes and therefore allows them to be 'off-duty', or at least a reduced workload for the Queen.

As well as Gordonstoun, where Philip was one fo the first pupils, Hahn founded many other schools based on his "Salem School" model, including the first Outward Bound school in Wales in the 1940s. It was this, and the educational philosophy expressed in his "Six Declines of Modern Youth" (and his recipe to reverse those declines) that the Duke of Edinburgh adopted to base his awards on. By the time the DofE awards were established in 1956, Hahn had retired due to ill health.
