That is a very informative little diagram. So if you are dragging a 15lb lead along the ocean floor, does it not get caught up in kelp/shopping carts ?
Secondly how do you know that a 1lb baby fishy is on the line?

We use special release clips so when a nice sized fish takes the bait, it usually pulls the line away from the clip. Smaller fish usually shake the line but sometimes you can have a little un on the hook and not notice it until you check your gear.

Obviously I meant steel. Kelp is not an issue but other crap in the sea is, you can usually spot a tideline and that’s where the rubbish collects so one tries to avoid those areas. The main problem is the ocean floor topography. Not a problem when you're in 200ft of water but places where you're fishing in shallower water or near reefs one has to keep a vigilant eye on the depth sounder otherwise you can get your balls caught and that’s not good.

$40-$60 per ball depending on lead prices. Plus the two down riggers which are $600 each plus you need at least one as a spare. It all adds up.

Looking out of our office window I spotted this truck parked with handy rear seat for grandma who isn't 100% continent front and back- I say seat, I think it may have been a home made commode. At least smells wouldnt collect, especially at higher speeds
