Default Political opposition to provincial liquor control in Canada

After reading this article and as we're getting closer to the festive season I was wondering if there are either political parties and/or single issue lobbyists/movements that support the repeal of the provincial liquor boards control? I care very little about Canadian politics as it usually very dull and unimportant but this issue is one that affects most of us, so I wondering if anyone knew anything more about it?

For my part, I'm certainly against this Prohibitonite government control of alcohol sales and licensing. Its wrong, its patronizing, its immoral and it's false economy.

You should have done more/better research before gracing Canada with your presence, lol.

Why do we have to pay nearly four times the amount for the same swill the Americans drink? I'm sure this is an issue most of us could get behind.

I think a Green Initiative is called for. Having off licenses in different buildings from supermarkets means driving an extra block every time one goes shopping. It means separate packing. Liquor stores are environmentally less sound than booze in supermarkets.

How much booze can you bring back from the states? Can you do booze run with a white van like you can in france?

Its definitely one of the arguments. But the biggest one is; we're grown ups.

Speak for yourself. I, for one, am glad that the good folk at Queens Park and similar provincial authority temper my slavery to the demon drink. If it weren't for 1950s Canadian protestantism I'd be a lush.

Now when can I get back to France?

I agree, totally patronising, anti-competitive and third world.

Still, at least in QC we can buy booze in supermarkets, grocers and petrol stations!

We do, at least, have Liquor stores adjacent to some supermarkets. One can actually push ones trolley from one to t'other although you have to pay for your booze/food prior to exiting the appropriate store.

Provincial Liquor control is an abomination but like all things Canadian, it is a price we pay for a better life for our children.....

In QC...isn't it only beer and wine that can be bought in a dep or supermarket or petrol station.....spirits are at the SAQ aren't they...and ditto goes for any wine that you would recognize.

Costco may be the exception for wine you would recognize.

Yes, you're right.... anything over a certain alcohol content can only be bought at the SAQ. And they do seem to have the monopoly on decent wines!

Still, it's really nice to be able to pop to the 24H petrol station when your beer's run dry!

Personally I am in favour of the LCBO, it makes it harder for kids to get their hands on alcohol, and it recyles the cash windfall from the alcohol sales back into the government tax base which keeps my taxes down. I wish they had a wider selection of wines, but I am not convinced that cheap booze is any more of a good thing than cheap ciggies would be, it aint good for you in large doses, you know that, right?

I'm afraid I think this to be quite wrong. Firstly, I see no evidence that it's true. Secondly, if it were true, it would be an inducement for the youth of today to indulge in the widely available street drugs, particularly crystal meth, which I regard as being a greater threat.

Furthermore, the position of the LCBO as regards packaging, in short you can buy anything you like but it'll be packed in paper bags, is environmentally unsound and an example of the Canadian fetish for supercillious busybodyism at its most glaring.

They used to provide high quality plastic bags which I reused repeatedly; I have seven year's worth of accounting in LCBO bags. Now having driven to a shop remote from other errands, I get cans of beer in paper bags which don't last even as far as the car. It is, I think, fair to say, that the staff of Revenue Canada are more friendly and more interested in customer satisfaction than the staff of the Liquor Control Board. Their union wants busting and they want to end their days slinging burgers.
