Happened to be looking at something else on my calendar, and noticed it was Shrove Tuesday tomorrow (February 5th). Wow, it seems to have "snuck" up quickly this year.

At my convent boarding school in Swaziland, there were some Portuguese-speaking girls from next door Mozambique. Because of them we had a sort of Mardi Gras celebration with costumes (very tame compared with Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, I'm sure). Other than that, Shrove Tuesday was unknown in Swaziland.

It isn't much of a celebration here in Calgary either, at least not that I'm aware of. When I was downtown this past Sunday, though (now that I come to think of it), I saw a notice about a Mardi Gras celebration at Cowboy's (a nightclub).

It was really when I started participating in this forum that I found out that British people celebrated it. I guess people in Eastern Canada celebrate it too, the most notable example being the Winter Carnival in Quebec City.

Anyway, if you celebrate it, Happy Pancake Day to you.

Here is a swedish pancake topping recipe from my nan.

Get lingonberry jam from Ikea.

Take small bowl, spoon in a couple of table spoons of the jam.

Add a little cream (normal 15% cream - not whipped)

Stir

You should have nicely pink colored mix of jam and cream, spread thin layer over pancake, roll it up, enjoy.

Nan called it Angel Food

Lingon on pancakes?! Now I know for sure you Swedes are crazy!

Its fairly big in Winnipeg, all the churches seem to be having their pancake celebrations!

Yay another reason to stuff me face with british pancakes.

But does anyone know what the Canadian equivalent of treacle is? I havent been able to find any.
I think it might be molasses but ive been to scared to buy it incase its not.

Treacle, molasses as far as I know they are the same thing Wikipedia seems to agree.

I have bought me a lemon, my daughter is all excited, YAY! for pancakes. So simple so quick, why do I only do them on jiff lemon day??????

We will probably get through a litre of batter mix - my daughter pigging on most of them as that will be her supper (a tradition my mother introduced my sister and I to) I will manage to get one or two in, hubby doesn't like them and I'll let one go cold for Henry. Obviuosley he doesn't get lemon and sugar!.

Out of interest I have lemon and sugar as a rule on my pancakes, anything else is not quite right, however a banana, ice cream, cream and butterscotch sauce is good for a treat. What toppings do you all have?

Maple syrup or the Angel Food, mentioned above. Lingon Jam on its own. Sugar.

On cold pancakes a thin spreading of butter topped with sugar.

Sugar and cinnamon is also very nice.

This is where my OH is just plain weird! (Well you read some of his posts so you already know that!)

He "sometimes" makes pancakes........... but he does not want me to eat them while they are hot........... oh no....... he wants us to put them in a tupperware and eat them over the course of a few days! Is it just me or that is that plain silly............. fresh, hot and yummy! So what if you eat a few in one go

If I feel like being a nice wife I may make him some for breakfast............ he is terribly ill you know................ he has the .............. "man cold".

Lemon and sugar.

As kids we had to eat 1 savoury pancake before we got to the lemon and sugar, I think it was some kind of grey mushroom sauce we had to have. Yuk. But I'd be brave and think of the lemon and sugar that was just around the corner

As a child it was always Tate and Lyle Syrup. Then the pancake was rolled.

But virtually anything goes really.

i never knew of pancakes with lemon and sugar until i moved to England(from France)!
we'd have them with just sugar ,jam or best of all nutella , also savoury version with ham ,cheese etc.......
