OK, so are we all clear about this now?
When you have a cold, you take some "cold-cure" and carry on, unless you are endangering other people who are at risk, in which case you stay at home for a day or two ..... bearing in mind that most people are contageous before they even really get sick with a developing virus!
When you have flu' you stay at home, mainly because you cannot get up anyway .... you drink lots of fluids, get plenty of rest and take Advil or whatever to make the symptoms more bearable.
Neither of these viruses can be cured by a visit to a doctor, unless you need a "sick note".
However, if you have very productive cough or sinuses, that don't start to improve by a couple of weeks (say) and still feel unwell at this time, you may have a secondary infection that may be treatable with antibiotics, though it's still worth trying steam inhalations and decongestants in my opinion.

Can I just add - I get the flu shot every year after having the real thing and never wanting it again. Ever since me and O/H started getting the shot, we've never had anything remotely like flu, and he hasn't had his usual winter bout of bronchitis, either. I think everyone should get the flu shot, it certainly can't hurt.

- Adults and children with serious health problems, and the people who live with them
- Seniors (people 65 or over)
- Health care workers
- Children 6-23 months, and their families
Other people may get a flu shot but they might have to pay a small fee.
Cheers

Too true. I've had Flu twice in my lifetime:
Couldn't get out of bed.
Couldn't lie down.
Couldn't stand up.
Every bone ached.
Head in agony and spinning.
Nauseous constantly.
Wanted to die.
Was too hot then too cold.
Coughed incessantly.
Was incredibly weak.
Sound familiar? Still suffered from symptoms weeks later.

Contractors and people running their own business never get ill, ever. I died a year ago and I'm still working.

My dad, a doctor, was rarely ill, but once he developed a terrible cough and was obviously sick. One of his partners eventually persuaded him to get an Xray, which showed "something" on his lung. He was advised to go to bed and rest, and to stay off work for at least three weeks ..... I think he went back after another 2 days!

I worked with a old guy years ago who did his back in, and had to sleep on a board. He'd order a taxi in the morning and the taxi driver and his mate would carry him flat on his back, strapped up, and lay him down on the back seat of the taxi. Same at work, they'd unload him, carry him to his desk, where he'd work standing up all morning and making magnificent groaning noises. Off to the pub at lunchtime for 3 or 4 pints of medicine, then he was a bit more relaxed in the afternoon. He was like that for weeks, and never once missed a day.
Splendid fellow.

OH and I had that at the same time a few years ago. We spent a full week with him on the 3-seater sofa and me on the 2-seater, each with a blanket and bottles of water/gatorade sleeping through tv shows. When one of us felt less dizzy, they'd get up and make lemsip or tea, otherwise we stayed where we were. It was kind of miserable to not having anyone to look after us, but in a way it was kind of nice to be going through it together

If you do go out in public with a cold or bronchitis Canadians will react as if you have the bubonic plague and run a mile. Enjoy!
