Good for you. My Northern dad was much the same. RIP.

that's good point. I'm from the North West but moved here from Miami. Moved about the UK a fair bit as I was in the Navy: Torpoint, Cornwall, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Rosyth, Scotland.

edit: spent a lot of time around Lancaster. Morecambe and the Lakes as that is where my dad and his side of teh family are from...Lancaster is actually a nice little city.

I know what you mean....there are nice bits, but if I did go back, I think I would give the south a go.

I lived in Plymouth for my teens and early adulthood...now that is a dump! I bet you were a regular down Union St on a Sat night if you were in the Navy!

In all fairness to the North of England. There are some beautiful areas. Derbyshire, the Lakes, Saddleworth, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales.... with lots of quaint smaller market towns. There are also some nice smaller towns such as Lancaster, Chester or York for instance. I think what is dank that the major cities tend to be all similar with awful inner-city areas, largely made up of either terrace houses or crappy council estates.

They don't come much more southern than me. Any further south and I'd have been born a mackerel.
