No Future for Future Shop

Re: No Future for Future Shop
I think it will
I saw something about the FS website having changed so I googled Best Buy and Moncton/Fredericton and they came up as 'new' BB stores.
A bit more notice would help.

The fact that they waited until the employees arrived at work this morning before telling them is absolutely appaulling, the HR Manager needs a good thrashing...

Re: No Future for Future Shop
I think the only surprise here is how out of the blue it was. I don't know the info behind the Best Buy buyout back in 2011, but if there weren't any store closures at that time this is long overdue. Same company, same over priced prices, same service.
I feel sorry for the employees that lost their jobs.

If a Future Shop has no Best Buy near by, chances are it will open as Best Buy next week. April 4th is the date the re-branded stores are to reopen. They seem to only be closing stores permanently when there is a Best Buy nearby already.

I did know BB and FS were the same company and I had wondered why on earth there existed two of essentially the same stores, especially when some are in the same plaza.
Obviously sad for the people who lose their jobs, and it seems a little off that this was announced on a Saturday, and not during the week, one does wonder why.
I can't see the FS in Burlington (Just off Guelph line) being re-opened, as there's a BB within 5km / 10 min drive away.

Our Best Buy closed last year. I would imagine the two FS's we use will just re-name. I'd be very surprised if either closed.

It's because the Canadian economy is slowly making its way deeper into the poop hole.

I had a search around to see if I could find out if the Futureshop near me is changing to Best Buy or not... for anyone in Oakville, I'm referring to the Futureshop at Dorval Crossing. I don't think there's another BestBuy particularly nearby (there is in Burlington, and there is off of Dundas close to the 403 - maybe 10-15 minutes drive away)... not sure if my google-fu skills are just off today or if the list hasn't been published?

Re: No Future for Future Shop
can't find original source material, but this report Future Shop is done: 66 stores gone for good, 65 to become Best Buy locations | Globalnews.ca suggests the Dorval Crossing location will be one of those to close permanently. Seems a little odd to me, too - would have thought the market could sustain that one well enough, with the next nearest BestBuy stores as far away as they are.
Bah.

Re: No Future for Future Shop
I never quite understood Future Shop after Best Buy moved into town. They both sold the same stuff at the same price, and were just competing against each other.
Big problem is that most of what they sold was cheaper online, and the things I would have bought there to avoid waiting days for delivery were rarely in stock.

The Future Shop was always so expensive, I don't know if ours will reopen, but we don't have a Best Buy. The Source has much better prices.
The fact that they waited until the employees arrived at work this morning before telling them is absolutely appaulling, the HR Manager needs a good thrashing, what a disgusting way to treat your staff....just because you can, doesn't make it acceptable

You just go in and tell them what it is elsewhere and ask for a match or tell them you'll buy if they can do it cheaper. The salesman could pay the discount out of their commission.
At Best Buy it's the published price.
In 6 years I have purchased 3 or 4 items at both so it's no surprise. Ecommerce will continue to preen the bricks and mortar retail sector much like it started doing in the UK in 2008ish.
It's just the old Canada being 10 years behind thing catching up.

Re: No Future for Future Shop
My problem with Future Shop is in the last year or 2, when we would go in and they wouldn't have it in the store but could order it and have it shipped to us.
Well if I wanted to do that, I would have just ordered online to begin with and not bothered to come to the store.
I stopped going to FS pretty much as they kept stock levels in BB better and the prices were nearly identical.
I did buy the washer dryer from FS, only because we had some gift cards to buy them, and we did go to the store first as it did show being in stock online, but the store had none, but they could order it for us, but the store wouldn't honor the online promotion of 100 dollars off, so we came home and ordered them online, the sales person would not honor the 100 dollars online promotion, so what benefit was there to having him do it?
This explains why the FS in West Vancouver looked liked a BB in terms of lay out, maybe they re-did stores that were going to rebrand in advance so they could change them over in a week?
Our main electronics store locally are London Drugs (biggest, kind of odd our electronics store is a drug store...lol) followed by Wal-Mart, and then the Source, but the Source is really only good for small stuff and cell phones or harder to find items.
But none of them have the selection of a proper electronics store.
HDMI cables come from Dollarama for 3 dollars, so far they work perfectly and beat paying the over inflated prices the other stores wan't.
