Future Shop shutters Canadian stores, will re-brand as Best Buy - The Globe and Mail

I never quite understood Future Shop after Best Buy moved into town. They both sold the same stuff at the same price, and were just competing against each other.
Big problem is that most of what they sold was cheaper online, and the things I would have bought there to avoid waiting days for delivery were rarely in stock.

The Future Shop was always so expensive, I don't know if ours will reopen, but we don't have a Best Buy. The Source has much better prices.
The fact that they waited until the employees arrived at work this morning before telling them is absolutely appaulling, the HR Manager needs a good thrashing, what a disgusting way to treat your staff....just because you can, doesn't make it acceptable

Timing has to coincide with public announcement so as not to undermine the Best Buy plans. If that went pear shaped even more may lose jobs. It has to be a business decision, not emotional.
I have purchased some items at FS, the prices were OK on sale, the staff were so surly in my experience and unhelpful. FS has commissioned sales people and BB has salaried.

In my experience, that's been normal for layoffs in companies I worked for. I'd arrive in the morning, go to my desk, and the guy sitting next door would tell me that twenty people got laid off when they arrived that day. The only exception was the company which decided to lay off a third of the staff, so they called us all into a big meeting in the afternoon to ask for volunteers (and half of us volunteered).

Lots of other retail stores closing too, Rickis/Bootlegger in trouble too by the look of things, I would think smaller towns like Red Deer that has a Future Shop and a best Buy and two Rickis and 2 bootleggers and 2 cleos will lose the spare ones. We have one mall that has been completely revamped and the other, previously better mall is slowly declining, if Rickis and Cleos go it will hit them again. Lost Sears after the renos on the other mall and Safeway last year, 2 big empty spaces.

Hopefully losing the big chains will at least be beneficial for local stores. The stuff I've been buying from the Future Shop near where I work, I'll now have to buy from the local electronics store near where I live.
That said, they always seemed to have more people in there buying stuff than Future Shop did any time I visited...

Not surprising really, never made sense to me why Best Buy was operating 2 chains that sold identical things, and especially never made sense when there was a Best Buy and Future Shop next to one another, or directly across the street.
Sad for the job losses though. The future isn't big box electronics stores so it was only a matter of time. Best Buy down in the US has been downsizing for a few years now, and reducing the size of their stores and trying to adapt.
Its worse down there since Amazon sells virtually everything under the sun and for less money along with who knows how many other online companies selling the same stuff.
I do wonder if they will re brand the Downtown Vancouver FS to BB or just close it. I don't think there is a BB downtown.

I think the only surprise here is how out of the blue it was. I don't know the info behind the Best Buy buyout back in 2011, but if there weren't any store closures at that time this is long overdue. Same company, same over priced prices, same service.
I feel sorry for the employees that lost their jobs.

sad day when an enterprise closes & direct employees lose their jobs.
All the while OP, it will be all down to Walmart, BB, Amazon & small electronic retailers such as Canada computers & the like.
I've bought from Amazon.ca for price & return policy reasons
Future shop is the last place that I'd buy any electronics

Our largest electronic store is a drug store....lol.. London Drugs.
Wal-Mart has a small selection of the most common stuff, but overall selection is poor, and we do have a Source store but they are lacking in selection as well but good place for cell phones and small accessories.
I don't buy much from Amazon.ca as their selection isn't very good and their prices are not any cheaper. I do buy from Amazon US a bit though, even with the exchange rate still cheaper for a lot of thing then the .ca site is.
9 stores in BC will close permanently, the rest will re-open as Best Buy on April 4th.
Most of the permanent closures have a Best Buy very close already.
