It used to be the only place in Canada where you could marry your first cousin. Does anyone know if Newfoundland has entered the 20th century yet and made this practise illegal ?

Is there a reason for your question? Do you have a one-eyed cousin there?

apparently not only in Newfoundland. Our neighbour let his daughter marry her first cousin and their first 2 children utter strange sounds instead of being able to speak but she just had her 3rd child, so it can't be illegal ... (I am not joking .. this is a real story)

Well I was watching time team & realised I had seen it so I thought I'd have a nose on BE. Google said it was the first day of fall here in oz & I thought to myself "hang on a sec, it's not bloody fall, it's autumn silly north americans"
This got me thinking about inbred newfies, thus the thread.

Not sure really, doesn't look like very much is happening there.
Winter ending in ON yet ? I suppose I could ask family with family in barrie, port perry, oshawa, just cant be bothered. I had facebook until family started requesting to add me. No respect for privacy these days is there ?

Winter does indeed seem in moderately full retreat in southern Ontario, snow all gone (perhaps just for the moment)... nothing evil in the forecast as far as I can see.
I forget, which part of Oz do you live in?

None at all. It makes you yearn for a bit of 21st century Luddism, if you ask me.

Snow always did go in march but usually one big storm around easter is what I remember.
Do you know art eggleton ? he was toronto mayor in the 80's when I lived there. I wonder if he went any further.

He was mayor when I first came to Toronto and was elected to parliament in the early 90's I think. He was a Minister (International Trade?) for a while but got on the wrong side of Chretien and was chopped.
Did you know him personally?
Edit: Were you affected by the fires at all?

No I just remember having a quick bite to eat one time in the yonge/eglinton centre and he and his entourage came waltzing past me on his mayoral campaign. He had so much makeup on he was glowing.
I did meet bob rae a few times though. I was organizing a tenants association for my apartment block and at the time he was all for tenants rights. I think he went on to federal politics ?
