Newfoundland Inbreds

It used to be the only place in Canada where you could marry your first cousin. Does anyone know if Newfoundland has entered the 20th century yet and made this practise illegal ?

In the 20th and 21st century it is still legal in the UK.

Nice question BTW. :eek:

Nah. I wish though. It's been a long time since you wandered over to the Canada forum, but welcome, we need new blood these days.

Is there a reason for your question? Do you have a one-eyed cousin there?

apparently not only in Newfoundland. Our neighbour let his daughter marry her first cousin and their first 2 children utter strange sounds instead of being able to speak but she just had her 3rd child, so it can't be illegal ... (I am not joking .. this is a real story)

Well I was watching time team & realised I had seen it so I thought I'd have a nose on BE. Google said it was the first day of fall here in oz & I thought to myself "hang on a sec, it's not bloody fall, it's autumn silly north americans"
This got me thinking about inbred newfies, thus the thread.

None at all. It makes you yearn for a bit of 21st century Luddism, if you ask me.

Winter does indeed seem in moderately full retreat in southern Ontario, snow all gone (perhaps just for the moment)... nothing evil in the forecast as far as I can see.

I forget, which part of Oz do you live in?

Hunter Valley NSW, 2hr north of sydney.
Snow always did go in march but usually one big storm around easter is what I remember.
Do you know art eggleton ? he was toronto mayor in the 80's when I lived there. I wonder if he went any further.

I dunno about further. He's been in the Senate since 2004. :rofl:

He was mayor when I first came to Toronto and was elected to parliament in the early 90's I think. He was a Minister (International Trade?) for a while but got on the wrong side of Chretien and was chopped.

Did you know him personally?

Edit: Were you affected by the fires at all?

No I just remember having a quick bite to eat one time in the yonge/eglinton centre and he and his entourage came waltzing past me on his mayoral campaign. He had so much makeup on he was glowing.
I did meet bob rae a few times though. I was organizing a tenants association for my apartment block and at the time he was all for tenants rights. I think he went on to federal politics ?

Big time. He ran for Federal Liberal Party leader last time around, when Stephan Dion got the nod. Dion had excellent policies, but zero charisma and resigned in January this year. Rae had another brief shot at it, but backed the current leader, Michael Ignatieff rather than force a race.

There'll be strident disagreement about my opinions from the usual crowd of neanderthals on here, but Bob Rae is an OK guy with lots of good ideas.

<the neanderthal steps forward>

He was a disaster when he attempted to manage Ontario. Nice guy, perhaps. Good ideas, maybe. Ability to implement, none at all. He should limit himself to posting his good ideas on the internet.

I agree with that of course, or rather his premiership coincided with a disasterous period of recession in Ontario... a bit like today really.

Regrets, Ive had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

Yes, there were times, Im sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

Ive loved, Ive laughed and cried.

I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
No, oh no not me,
I did it my way.

If not himself, then he has naught.
