Blue skies, white snow, looks stunning today. Chilly out. -minus something daft. Roads shouldn't be too terrible today. Trying to convince my husband that we should try cross country skiing this year, you never know it might be brilliant.

Went for a bike ride yesterday. 35km in shorts, t-shirt and fingerless gloves, paused at the half point & chilled on the beach for a bit, watching the waves, roll in. Sure, it was only 12C, but bright sunshine so felt nicer.

God I love being back in BC. A year in Manitoba should be constitutionally prohibited punishment

Here the routine is falling back into place. Get up, dress in old clothes, snow pants, balaclava, hooded jacket, blow the driveway in the dark, hope there's no to need for the hairdryer for any of the doors involved and not to slide into any ditches. Park the tractor. Wrap the dog in her coat, walk her out to the street in fear of the plough coming and not seeing us. Back indoors, shower, dress in work clothes. Feed dogs. Fetch car, off to work in the dark hoping not to run up the back of any unlit greige minivans.

Listen to woman blathering about trees garlanded in snow and singing Christmas songs. Tra-La-La!

Drive home unsafely in the dark. Blow the driveway. Feed the chickens, hope the heated waterer hasn't broken down again. Note that something else is frozen and jammed, plan to fix it on the weekend when there's light. That'll be after going to the doctor about the latest cold/flu thing everyone has. Add more layers, drive to barn, deal with mud fever, ice in hooves, breathing problems. Drive home, light fire, dream of Spring - only five months away.

I hate the cold, damp, dark winter days in the UK. My Toronto born and bred exSIL, said he had never been as cold as he was the Christmas we spent in the UK. At least here the sun is usually shining and the sky is bright blue, even if the temps are well below freezing for months on end.

I really am more suited to palm trees.

Yes, much prefer a -30 blue sky day than a +5 damp cold grey UK day. And much much prefer the palm trees.

Even though the sun comes out a bit more here, I'd far rather have the UK winter. It's much shorter and there's a spring for a start.

We've already had more snow than a whole damn winter back in Bristol.

It certainly is shorter. And not evety day is as dreich as this. Bright crisp days or even bright warm winter days in walkable streets and parks are nice too. Less hibernation here.

The winter days are so short in the UK...and more often than not grey and dreary.

Right now the sun has pushed the temp up in my condo to 27C. The sky is mainly blue and the sun is shining. Looking out of my window, across the lake, I could be in Florida...apart from the palm trees.
