My multi region DVD player I brought over from the UK has just died, does anyone know where I can get a replacement, have looked at all the ones in best buys and future shop, but none can be changed with just a code, it also needs a " S-VIDEO " output, any advise greatly received.

I bought one last week, works fine (I'm using it via HDMI, can't see why it wouldn't have S-Video but I would check this)

Most Toshiba and Philips DVD players can be coded, most if not all Sony players cannot. I have one of each, Toshiba & Philips, both work great and both are connected via HDMI. What site are you checking for codes? I find videohelp.com as the best. Why do you want an S-Video connection?

Take a trip to walmart, canatdian tire, zellers etc and jot down some model No's


Use the database here to find one you can make region free. I've converted three or four using this site

It says it's Region 1 in the box, but it plays all our UK dvds with no issues whatsoever, no hacking required

Thanks for the info, the one from Canadian tire is the digitron one I take it ?

We've had 2 or 3 digitrons from Canadian Tire. None have played UK DVDs.

Bought this one a couple of months ago, works fine with Uk DVD's, was super easy to hack and the Blu ray player is a bonus.

Thanks again, JGK, went to Walmart and did what you said, got a ONYX SW2300 off the shelf for under 40 bucks and easy to change over to region free.

Why bother with a dvd when you can have a Blu-Ray player for $100 that players region 1 and 2?

Thats a lot of money to pay if using s-video.

Our Blu-ray and DVD players have become museum pieces....but they are far from scrap-heap ready yet; particularly with regard to what displaced them at our home, the internet.

But with this ever present internet download cap bollox (and no viable alternative provider to either Rogers or Bell in NB), we will likely restrict our internet allowance to watching Brit TV, and may possibly can NETFLIX at some point (certainly not decided).

Overall, Netflix is value for money, but we may resort to trips back to the old corner store-DVD rental gaff...while they still exist at any rate (not done that for many months). Netflix takes about 1GB an hour (SD not HD)....if we went over, that would be say 3 bucks per movie...We can rent two BLU-Ray "new releases" for 5 bucks + tax at our local store.

We can add another 30GB to our plan (increasing to 125GB) for an extra 10 bucks plus tax, but have already had enough of playing the Rogers game for now.

Could you name one that does both region 1 and region 2 and plays PAL discs ?

You could always just buy a hard drive in an enclosure 1-3 TB, hand it over to a friend that downloads movies and get them to fill it up for ya, then plug it directly to your tv via HDMI.

Netflix from what I have heard, is just full of older movies
