You still have to have a firewall and virus checker. The internet runs slightly slow on Mac too. But you never really notice. Nether are better or worst. It just matter of what you get used to plus on Mac you can run XP or Vista if you like.

Errr, have you ever used a Mac?

Sorry to sound a bit thick, but I like to have things spelled out.:o

I do a google search for fire fox - down load it - then go on to the internet via their icon in the future?

Yes. Click on the icon that's got a fox around a world thing.

You can then browse to the firefox plugin site (should be a link) and install Adblock plus. I've not seen an years - it's great.

Whilst we're on the Mac v's PC (read Windows) game

Kind I remind the parties concerned that Mac is just a PC with Limited upgrade options (apple approved) running a fancy graphical front end on BSD (a flavour of Unix)

and Windows in its various forms running on a generic or branded PC generally doesn’t allow the machine to achieve it full potential

These days, yes a Mac has an Intel CPU and, hardware wise, is essentially a PC. The key difference is the tight integration of the OS to the hardware - something which is missing in a standard PC. Yes, the Mac OS kernel is UNIX based, but if you've ever used a Linux distro' they are miles apart in setup and usability. There is no comparison.

I hardly think you could say a Mac Pro has limited upgrade options - have you tried spec'ing one up at the Apple Store?

Agreed. And we're not comparing chip manufacturers, (IIRC some earlier Apples used Motorola chips?) we're talking about operating systems, their stability and their susceptibility to malware.

I currently run a Linux system

and yes I do know the limitations of OSX

Yep, they are all susceptible. But, quite simply, there are a lot less viruses and malware written for the Mac. Security by Obscurity. I've never had a single virus/browser hack/malware in the 5 years I've had Macs and I've never had a virus checker.

I've not had a virus on my pc that long either.

So it's not really a valid argument....thick people will find a way of breaking whatever computer they have by being thick and doing stupid things or going to dodgy sites and eventually it'll carp whatever computer your running.

Perhaps, and I'm sure you know much more about all this than I do, but just this week the e-mail client I use at work (on an XP box) ceased to function for no apparent reason.

XP helpfully told me that "This program is not responding" and asked if I wanted to send an error report to Microsoft. It didn't suggest that the error was in running an operating system from their good selves.

<I fixed it by uninstalling the client, partly from the control panel, but also partly "by hand", downloading it again from my computing department site and re-installing it. Worked fine>.

In this instance at least I do not believe that I acted as a "thick person doing stupid things."

Aye, fair enough...but you get that happening on a mac too, it's not just isolated to PC's running windows...that spinning beach ball, doesn't even tell you what's wrong, it spins, you go mental and the cycle goes on.

Shit happens, when it does, doesn't matter what computer your using it'll just annoy you, when it works, it works and mac/pc is no different in that regard.
