McMansion

Re: McMansion
Does it meet this definition?
In suburban communities, McMansion is a pejorative term for a large "mass-produced" dwelling, constructed with low-quality materials and craftsmanship, using a mishmash of architectural symbols to invoke connotations of wealth or taste, executed via poorly imagined exterior and interior design. It's not exactly mass produced and doesn't specify if high end construction materials used. 3 bedroom and 9 bathrooms WTF. Too much grass to cut and will be a bitch for clearing snow. Thinking of buying it Jings? |

Or a well off project managers or IT consultants retirement present. Obviously, the owner hosted parties hence the 9 bathrooms but didn't want the guests staying overnight as only 3 bedrooms on main floor but plenty of room for inflatable mattresses.

For 10 million there should be a ranch attached.

Re: McMansion
Severely overpriced I think. Reported average cost of a new build is $150/sf. This house 13000sf. Cost therefore about $2M. So lets assume a 100% premium to ensure high quality finish and you get to $4M.
So is land expensive here? A glance at Realtor.ca has this desirable residence on offer a little along the same road. https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/1...ky-view-county , and here you get a comparative shack with 150 acres for $1.25M, that's right 150 acres suggesting the 4 acres on offer is valued at around $50k. You'd need to want to launder a thick wadge of cash to consider this one. On the other hand it's probably owned by Donald Trump and we've come to understand how decimal points have a sort of ethereal quality where valuation of his properties is concerned. |

How about these lovely places. https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.43980...7i13312!8i6656 https://goo.gl/maps/Ef3NNtkAEw62 https://torontolife.com/real-estate/...reduced-price/ Not sure if it is still for sale or not. |

It's definitely a product of a small insular market which has developed its own sets of ideas and norms about what a "luxury house" ought to include... it's a bit like evolution really, where little mutations to the norm eventually become attractive and highly exaggerated in isolated communities - the freakish becomes the new normal. Then someone from outside comes in and sees it and thinks, "Christ almighty, what on earth has happened here??!!" |
Re: McMansion
If I had 10 million, I would not be buying a house in Alberta when you can gave ocean front house.
