Marmite Thread

So has anyone found those nice Big Squeeze marmite plastic tubs anywhere in Canada? I always bring them back as they're lighter than the glass jars and theoretically less liable to smash (unlikely a marmite jar is going to break to be fair) even though you can never get the last 10% of the real black gold out.

I wonder why the only marmite jars I've ever seen around Toronto are the smallest glass jars. Almost useless imho.

Re: Marmite Thread

Nope - just found the regular small jars here.

The way to overcome this is to bring the even larger plastic 600g tub back over with you! That bugger lasts a year.

(Wanders off, and considers making toast for a second breakfast now)

Why useless? They contain Marmite.

You can get the last 10% out. Use a finger.

Love(d) the stuff. When I moved to Canada, I decided to give it up! Went "cold turkey"....the first few days were really difficult.....but......I stuck with it! After a few weeks, the cravings went away, and I can honestly say that I am now completely marmite free.

If only I could be as strong with the smokes ...............

Why Steve? Do you have a hair shirt mentality? Giving in to your delight in Marmite doesn't lead anything worse....I don't think?

OK. But they are the foreplay of marmite

You can get the last 10% out. Use a finger.
For sure, but they kind of revert back to being a plastic jar for the last 10%. I still like 'em though.

I have nothing sensible to say....Just saw the word 'Marmite' and came as though called magically.....ummm Marmite
Maybe we need a separate branch for marmite? :-)

......yeeeees......but how can you be sure? How do I know that it's not the marmite which made my hair start to fall out? ....or turned me into the grumpy old man I am?;) Think about it .......if you have eaten marmite in the past .......how can you be sure it hasn't been responsible for those aches and pains you've endured over the years.

Having given up the marmite, I can state quite emphatically that the rate at which my hair loss happens has not increased nor, indeed, have I got any grumpier.

Think about it.

Marmite....watched frankie Boyle in york last year, the only gag I remember was the one where he said that Katie price was like marmite, you either hate her, or would like to see her on the end of a knife. Made me laugh!

Pot. Like the one on the label. The jar is presumably shaped to mimic it.

Marmite was originally sold in earthenware pots.

It's more than a pot really... that's why I wasn't quite sure how to describe it... Google translate indeed says it's a pot but I always picture a "marmite" as a huge pan on an open fire with bubbling ingredients inside...

Interesting though so presumably that's where it gets it's name from... hmm... there is no way it's originally French though!!!

Found this definition: Récipient de terre ou de métal, à fond plat ou arrondi, parfois sur trois pieds, muni d'un couvercle et généralement d'anses, et dans lequel on fait bouillir de l'eau, cuire des aliments.

It's a pot. It can be either earthenware or metal.

The Marmite spread itself was actually created by a German organic chemist.

Says it all, really!

Really? I thought it was invented in Burton-on-Trent where bitter was invented, and was a by-product of the brewing process. If there was German organic chemist knocking round there maybe he was a spy from Lowenbrau?

Oh no...I don't like Vegemite at all, and I don't know why. I used to live with a bunch of Aussies in the Gulf, and they were staunchly anti my Marmite too.

Because of this thread I started looking it up and it appears the Swiss have a sort of Marmite like concoction too called Cenovis, which I'd quite like to try.

I quite like other salty preparations too though, Umarmi Paste, Anchovy Paste and Gentleman's Relish are all rather good on toast.

Apologies...I am hungry and my mind is turning tummywards!:(

Anything 'potted' always yum too......but 'proper' potted, not meat paste.

South African made marmite has a hint of the vegemite about it- not bad but I prefer the British stuff.

That's basically Bovril. It has meat in it.

Bovril and Marmite were created by the same bloke. He obviously had a thing about yeast.

Yeah, very close... That was the closest I got to getting a marmite fix when I was growing up... In those days there were no "international" sections in the supermarkets!
Actually come to think of it, there weren't many supermarkets! lol
