Im not at all so sure. The only difference with technology and media today is people can become more desensitized so the shock value to the general public (younger generation possibly) may not be as great as days gone by. |

Something like 1-10% of the population are estimated to be psychopaths. This makes most psychopaths look charming.

Im not at all so sure. Now there are easier methods for such people to gain instant notoriety but, what was considered abnormal in Victorian times (showing one's knees in public) is now perfectly normal. Those that wish to be bombarded by sex nowadays log onto the appropriate website, in days gone by, they may have attended a peep show and, if that wasn't abnormal enough, abducted a person of their choosing and performed whatever acts satisfied them. As I said above, lighting a fire under a person's feet, tying their innards to a try and watching them die by them pulling them out as they walked around wouldn't have been particularly normal to someone living in Manchester while the American War of Independence was raging. For the Shawnee, it was perfectly normal. It will take a large amount of evidence to convince me that today's societies are any different to those of bygone times. |

But I don't think that's really the issue, there seems to have been a string of total nutcases in Canada over the last few years. There was this guy who is freaking NUTS. There was that RCAF officer in Ontario, Pickton in BC, Rafferty, the list is pretty long. Makes me wonder about the state of mental healthcare. |

It may, it may not. It seems to be that since humans first developed, they have beaten one another to a pulp and conducted all sorts of sexual assaults.
The reason we find these sort of crimes so abnormal now is because more is done to make them abnormal, most likely. Genghis Khan isn't around anymore. |

Re: Manhunt for Magnotta
Yeah but he'd come to the attention of the authorities on numerous occasions, I can't even bring myself to type what he did to cats but you'd think warning bells would have gone off.

Re: Manhunt for Magnotta
I'm sitting here thinking "hang on a minute, this guy uploaded a legit snuff film to a site that specialises in this, and they commented on it?????????"
Not "They went straight to the police because it seemed a little more realistic than the norm" oh no - they reviewed it. WTF - that site (and no I didn't check it out - too weak a stomach to even contemplate it amongst other things) should be taken down and the people running it charged as well. Also in the interview with the guy a few years back he reckoned 99% of people wouldn't understand his "urges" and might want to hurt him. Oh OK thats right - its ok for you to do it to someone, but if there is a possibility of someone coming after you - its not on. |
Re: Manhunt for Magnotta
I had a look at the site earlier, more in disbelief than anything. The video is currently not available "due to the heavy traffic" but there was one image from it which was more than enough, even for anyone who has a really good/professional reason to have to look at this kind of thing. Whoever did the editorial is taking credit, on behalf of the site users, for identifying the killer - which I suppose is a good thing???
The comments from site users were, believe it or not, were mostly complaints about the music on the video, the era of the music and arguments about how it was so good or how bad it was. I found myself clicking on a link to see a couple of people being mauled by animals (I suppose to see some kind of authentication) before closing the browser. Oh, there was some bad drifting accident in Saudi Arabia too but the definition of the footage was so bad you couldn't really tell what was going on. In all honesty, I've probably seen as bad on youtube and still have no idea if what I'm seeing was real or faked, I suppose I just want the truth and be able to judge for myself about what is real, or not. I am occasionally humoured by the Darwin awards but, at the end of the day, I have a lot of empathy for those who have to deal with the situation; to pick up the pieces (and deal with the aftermath).

Re: Manhunt for Magnotta
The video is still up??????????????????? This is a murder for gods sake, this guy has family (when / if they identify him) why the hell haven't they taken it down - thats not entertainment its just sick.
Mind you its a bit tough to stop a runaway train now - I bet it's been copied a gazzillion times already  I am truly appalled. |
Re: Manhunt for Magnotta
I dont really think this is a case of society gone wrong- it's more a case of someone having a clear mental problem.
You cant blame this level of violence on video games and movies. |

That is the thing about posting pictures and videos online, once it's in the "cloud", it's hard to pull it all back. That is what we try to teach our kids and teenagers (mostly females) in general that feel the need to post their provocative pictures online via facebook et al without thinking of the cons leading into the future. Then you get morons like Rhianna telling her female fans that "she feels sorry for guys who's girlfriends don't send them naked pictures" What kind of a message is that to young girls? I think we all know what happened to her at the end This guy/woman as they are calling Magnotta now is obviously twisted, and when you are linked to Karla Hamolka, that just reinforces the madness and sickness of it all. I know the cops might not feel the need to follow up on all leads, but when something like a MURDER is being reported especially from someone outside the country, it behooves them to at least pay some attention to the matter joke or no joke. Now they are saying this individual might be in France. |
