Default mains water turned off

The mains water if off to our house while they are working down the road. I don't understand why there is no hot water? Surely the tank should be full?

The tanks full, but there is no pressure to push the water out of it is my guess.

Ah, so I don't have to worry about it? Flederman is not contactable hence my question.

Have now boiled up some rainwater so I can wash before work.

There's no tank in the same way UK systems use tanks. The hot water system in a UK house is typically refilled from a header tank in the loft, so when the main is turned off you still get hot water while there's anything in the header tank to refill the cylinder. Here, though, the hot water heater is fed directly from the main: no mains pressure (coz it's turned off) means no hot water.

Ah, I see Iain got there first. What he said.

Don't bother washing. You can't be that smelly on a daily basis.

The hot issue has been dealt with, but didn't they (the work-crew) tell you they were going to cut you off? They should have, so you could fill a bath tub or whatever to tide you over (as it were).

Might have been a burst rather than a planned re-zone / repair.
Less familiar with normal practise &/or mains breaks / bursts in Canada, but we have 1000's of burst per year (not my house, but my Co.!) that could result in a similar situation.
Should be shortly followed by re-zoning & tanker / bowser for those without.

They left a note yesterday stuffed between the screen doors so we didn't get the note until this am. It said it would be off from 8am for 4 hours, seems they meant to say 8 hours.

Wasn't worth washing - first patient needed cleaning up after
