Rare roast beef on a roll with Gouda cheese and mustard from the local Dutch delicatessen.

Rare enough to look as though the cow was just slaughtered outside.

Lovely.

No lunch at all at lunchtime! I am finding it hard what with not being at work until next week and having to answer Skyping OH in the early hours of the morning to fit in with PDT his end.
Had my 'lunch' later - a nicely-done REAL burger (without a bun), served with grilled Portobello mushrooms topped with sliced tomato and a few dots of blue cheese and a very small portion of leftover boiled potatoes that I sauteed.
Really yummy!

That does sound very good. I have found that roquefort makes a nice blue cheese topping on burgers, its a little too strong for chicken but ground beef as a flavour tends to stand up for itself.

Can't beat home cooking:thumbup: Mind you, I can't afford to eat out, so no choice but to get good at it. Today mine was Yorkshire Blue, I think. I like it quite ripe, so it is sometimes hard to tell what it started out as by the time I deem it ready for use:eek:
Dolcelatte is my favourite, especially in pasta with garlic, spinach and mushrooms.
I might have that tomorrow:p!

I'm with you there. I only eat out for things I can't really make well at home. Even on car trips I take along a nice packed lunch. I found this website very useful for lunch ideas.

My 'Legend in my own lunchtime' claim to fame is that once an Official at Donington 'Monsters of Rock' Festival checking the stuff we were taking into the arena said mine was the best picnic he had ever seen:thumbsup:
I take that as an excellent recommendation - Rock fans really appreciate a good picnic:D

Some kind of pasta thingy and a japanese-inspired sauce thingy the OH made. With chopped up green things and meat.

Nothing - again! I really must try harder.
The day seems to rush by and lunch just doesn't happen. (Mind you, breakfast isn't happening really, either.)
Tomorrow I will.
Definitely.
I promise.

Yesterday my day was made.

They put the Mac and Cheese back into the self-serve section at the IKEA in Richmond, so you can pile up a MASSIVE bowl of the stuff for $1.99 :D

I'm contemplating taking advantage of that again today...

What is 'the Mac and cheese' that rates so highly?
I love cheese, so anything with cheese in it is usually OK with me, but the 'Mac' bit is a worry!

Macaroni and Cheese.

It's very popular in Canada so I'm surprised you haven't heard it called Mac and Cheese before. There's also a popular product known as "Kraft Dinner" which includes the macaroni and cheese powder. I can't stand it personally but it's quick and easy I guess compared to making a cheese sauce.

I'm not in Canada yet, unfortunately - just OH!
Macaroni cheese - MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm:thumbsup:
LOve that!

Today I had baked beans on toast for lunch. Proper English Heinz ones, not that Canadian muck with 10 pounds of sugar and half a pigs head floating around in it. That stuff is just vile.

Couple of slices of Tofurkey in a wholewheat roll. Then I was still hungry so I had a Skor bar. That's what I call a 'balanced diet' :p

Hahaha. I've gotten used to the sugary beans, my tastebuds have adapted. I had the Lidl Baked Beans when I was in Spain one time and those were very sweet too.

What bread did you have it on?

A couple of slices of multigrain from Cobbs bakery. Their bread makes excellent bread for sandwiches, especially shrimp sandwiches. I make a cocktail sauce from mayo, red sauce and a dash of horseradish.

BLT made with cheesebread, and sourcream instead of mayo.

yum

Re: Lunchtime Choices

Cobbs bread is the best.

Yesterday I had KD (kraft dinner) doctored with frozen veges. Nothing but the best for Kiwilass et famille.

Today, hot dogs in cheap-ass Safeway buns with mustard, mayo & tomato sauce. Like I said, we insist on high lunch food standards.

there's an imported foods place near me that has a shipment of real Heinz beans - says 2 for one pound 19 on the side. He's selling them for 1.50 a tin which is not bad at all. It's hit and miss when he has them though.

CanadaJimmy Sep 4th 2010 9:24 am

Re: Lunchtime Choices

I don't get why the imported food shops don't just go to ASDA or something. The Smart Price Beans were only 29p! And very nice as well.

Re: Lunchtime Choices

Two small baked potatoes (I like smaller ones rather than one big one - the skin is the best part!) baked at home in foil for an hour and then the foil opened up to crisp the skin a bit, with a little bit of butter and some cheddar cheese grated over. I just knew it was going to be great when I got that lovely smell of the hot, crispy potato skin as I took them out of the oven. Delicious:thumbsup:
PLEASE - never microwave a potato! It should be a deadly sin:frown:

Today, I'm looking forward to Chunky Soup New England clam chowder. The key is to put boiling water into the Thermos flask and let it stand for while, then put your hot soup in it. That way it'll keep warm longer.

I had a veggie curry combo with naan bread and some rice from the international food court on hornby (or is it howe). They key there is to get there early at 11:45, that way you don't have to line up and you get a good table.

I went to IKEA for lunch again today, had Garden Veg soup, salad, dinner roll and a weird elderflower drink for $6.

Then I went down to the IKEA bistro and had one of their yummy frozen yogurts :D

Home oven-baked potato again! Today with fresh tomatoes roasted with garlic, salt, pepper and a little mustard. A bit of cheese with chives over the top, too!

I think lunch is an underrated meal. People go on about breakfast and evening dinners but with lunch you usually get to eat it on your own and its break from work.

I have to say, I'm surprised at the amount of people having hot lunches. Meals that I would consider to be dinner rather than lunch. Does no one else have a banana chopped up in a bap, or am I a complete pleb?

I agree with the first part - I am often too tired to really enjoy my evening meal and don't really like to eat late, but I often come home late and then by the time it is prepared it is really late. I do it out of habit so that OH has a meal.
Last few weeks since OH has been in Canada I have hardly ever made food in the evening - I just don't feel hungry and since there's only me....
Sadly, if I am working, I often don't get to eat lunch at all (not even a banana in a bap!), so having time for a lovely lunch on a day I am not working is a super luxury. It's so nice to have time to eat it slowly and taste it!

Wow, fancy stuff ;)

My usual "pleb" meal is butter and herb instant mash potato. You can get two packs for about $1.60, so it works out as a quick and very filling lunch for 80c :)
