Re: Local newspaper stories
J and wife live hand to mouth on the breadline. If they could save at all it would be towards helpful mental health therapy. I very much doubt they buy frivolously at all - not that you suggested they did - as they simply do not have the money for that.
My family was poor when I was young. That was also hand to mouth . Savings just wasn't a part of it from memory. It was all about being able to get from one wage day to another . I rather feel it will be the same for Mr and Mrs J.
I can add that when one is poor with nothing left over in the pot each week that clothes do not come into it really. You get by with what you have year in year out. The minimum.

Yes, if we had sufficient disposable income it would go to therapy which isn't affordable for a lot of people, going rate for a psychologist is in the $190 to $200 per 50 minute range, so not exactly low cost, and the psychological testing runs into the thousands.

Bus drivers to hold strike vote next week.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...vote-1.5308351
Union is hoping for pay to be closer to what Toronto drivers get, other issues are hiring more drivers, and providing more breaks to drivers.
Current pay range is $22.83 to $32.61 per hour.
1st 30 days $22.83
1st 8 months $24.46
2nd 8 months $26.09
3rd 8 months $29.35
Top out at $32.61
That is for the big buses, community bus drivers are paid less.
If you like and are capable of driving large vehicles, doesn't seem like a horrible job.

Even police cars are not safe in East Vancouver anymore.

Wonder what the announcement in BC Green party will be tomorrow?
https://www.straight.com/news/131056...ans-make-major
The Green Party support is what has kept BC NDP in power, if they pull support, government may topple and an election might be coming sooner than expected.
Worrisome as the BC Liberals hate the poor.

I suspect the homeless population will only get worse, housing is really becoming an issue in more and more parts.

Not impeachment, not Syria, not the election, not protests in Hong Kong: This, out of Moose Jaw.

Don't put your cell phone in a cup holder when driving in BC, police might give you a ticket, although you may have a good chance of winning in court.
I always put my phone in the trunk when driving, or in my backpack which goes in the trunk, not giving police any reason to issue a ticket.

A national network show has done a bit on crime in Regina and a new approach to dealing with gangs. One photo shows the crime scene I posted about back when it happened and I heard the shots (there's our back alley!).

6 of the most expensive riding's for renters are in Metro Vancouver region.
One problem is older, more affordable rental housing is being torn down to build expensive high rise modern condos that some might become rentals at premium prices, with no replacement for the lower priced rentals being torn down, leaving seniors, low income, and disabled with fewer and fewer options when it comes to housing, eventually only the rich will have housing.

I guess this is the day of the Greta Thunberg protest/counter-protest in Alberta:
"Organizers said the counter-rally is meant to be peaceful."
Does that mean they won't all be honking their horns?

Re: Local newspaper stories
This happened in NYC but talk about tragic coincidence. Both were in critical condition as of Thursday night.
An EMT driving an ambulance has a stroke.
The responding EMT in another ambulance runs to help, and has an aortic aneurysm before reaching his co-worker. A physician who was riding with the EMT who had the aortic aneurysm was able to provide medical assistance until the 2 EMT's were taken to hospital.
