Default Learning to fish / hunt

OK, so this might sound like a silly question, but does anyone know how one might go about learning to fish?
I dont really know anyone that fishes, and it's something I'd like to get in to, and when they're older, take the kids too.

I've never done it before, but want to try and get in to more "outdoorsy" things ... like killing and eating stuff...

This is the sort of thing you should ask Lord Vader. I expect he's in a particularly good mood just now.

Try these guys. OH took some fly fishing classes with them a couple of years ago and they should know of any other fishing lessons/teachers around your area.

Tight lines! J

I go fishing quite a lot, but you don't really have to know much about it, you just get the guide to tie up the equipment, clip it to a thing called a down-rigger and sit back a drink beer. If a fish bites, the guide sets the hook, gives you the rod and you try and not lose the fish. Its not hard at all and jolly good fun.

It has been known to take a rifle to the thieving seals.

...that's not very Canadian. Aren't you supposed to beat them to death with an iced hockey bat?

That's only the baby ones, the big ones are far too grumpy to get that close.

Im born and bred in Canada, married to a British guy. Fishing is quite simple, takes trial and error..and patience! If you have a local hardware store (ie canadian tire) just go to the outdoors dept and either look for yourself or ask an associate. I would recommend for beginning to get a reel & rod combo (basic ones start about 30$). Best bet is to read articles on the net about your area regarding lures and bait to use. I know in Vancouver there are local shops that offer classes as well, not sure about your area though. Regards to hunting, start with getting a gun licence...obtained in a weekend type course at shooting ranges/gun clubs/and privately. Best way to learn is with other people, couldnt hurt to search for outdoors clubs in your area or even posting in the plutonic section on Craigslist looking for like minded people.

good luck
