Default Kettles

What do you use, electric or hob ? I've just purchased a small hob one and I've noticed that it's quite slow. My UK electric kettle can boil 500ml in 1 minute, where as the gas hob kettle takes nearly 5 mins for the same amount. Not sure which costs more to use.

This is our kettle, used at least 5x per day, 7 days per week for the last 2 years and still going strong.

We have a hob kettle that boils enough water for a mug in just about one minute (I've just been to time it) ….. on an induction hob. Induction hobs are cool!

Is your husband Mrs P?

Mostly when I go to make tea in the morning, the first thing I do is pour out about 3/4 of the water in the kettle!

My MIL was the same - when we used a kettle.

------------------------------------------------------------

We use a Keurig machine now. I have my drip coffee machine, but if I just want a cup without making a 6 cup pot, then I use the Keurig, which I also use if a small amount of hot water is needed.

I bought it for an induction hob, actually. Haven't tried it there yet. I like induction, but prefer gas.

When we got a gas - LPG, no natural gas in these parts - stove, we bought a shiny kettle to go on the hob. We rapidly ditched it for the whatever-brand-it-is-I-cant-remember electric kettle from Crappy Tire we have as it's much, much, much, much, much faster. In fact if I am cooking something that needs boiling in water I'll boil the water in the kettle and then fill up the saucepan on the hob rather than just boiling water on the hub.

I have one of those fancy Breville Tea Maker kettles (was received as a gift), and it actually boils water pretty quickly by North American standards (around 1-2mins). I rarely end up using the tea making functions on it though.

Induction is way more efficient, and is especially good in summer because there is no heat "spilling" from under the kettle/ pan - induction "makes the pan get hot", unlike every other form of pan heating, which "makes something hot", and then hopes that most of the heat transfers to the kettle/ pan. It is one of the weird things about cooking using an induction hob/cooker - there are these pans in front of you, merrily boiling away and yet you barely feel any heat coming off them, as you would with both gas and regular electric cookers. Also you turn them off, and the boiling stops, dead - a whistle kettle stops whistling in less than two seconds, a pan "bubbling up" doesn't even need to be lifted, because there is almost no reservoir of heat under the pan, only the heat that the pan has transferred to the glass, which is minimal. ….. And if a pan does splash or boil over you can just lift the pan and immediately wipe the glass with a damp cloth - try doing that with any other form of cooker!

That said, electrical kettles are pretty efficient as the heating element is entirely surrounded by water. The thing about an induction cooker/ hob though is that it can pull even more than 3KW, so can be faster than a 3KW kettle, AND you can put a tiny amount of water in the kettle without risking the element overheating.

I have an induction hob too. It's fantastic. Only thing is that my on the hob coffee maker is aluminium and it doesn't work. Have you tried any of those converter plates? I did have to buy all new pans too but the old ones were past it anyway so I saw that as a plus. I do miss my bialetti espresso though.

I can't say we have, …… but Mrs P saw replacing a load of her pans with new stainless steel ones as another "plus" of going induction!

I have the same kettle as Danny B. It boils the water, but it’s loud and slow. It gets plenty of use though. I am kind of coveting Jimmy ‘s though.

I shall, of course, be following the recommendation of my domestic guru, Pulaski and getting an induction hob when the need arises (is that a word, autocorrect doesn’t think so?) but I am currently only in the market for my third Canadian hand mixer in 8 years (British one was still going strong after 20 years when it was abandoned)

Why do you live with someone who fills the kettle to the top for 1 person? I do, but why, it’s sooo stupid. I have ‘that’ conversation regularly...to no avail

I’m an electric kettle woman.
