I'm not sure the exchange rate of celeb deaths to points laboured is exactly 1 to 1, otherwise I can't fault your logic.

I'll confess that I actually have the same kind of thoughts when people post life-event threads on here (how/where they got married; that they sold their house; they are having kids; etc). I find it tedious and self-indulgent but I try not to sneer at them. Mainly because why sneer at a subset of the forum when you can sneer at the entire community.

MMMMMMMMMM

Some points to consider there, BUT at least those events are happening to people who we 'know'. ;)

Without wishing to sound too much like a c***, that doesn't necessarily mean I care.

Oh I often agree, but there are some here who I do like to hear about.

Well yes, some of those kinds of thread are of interest to at least some of the readers on this forum. Just not me - I find the petty details of peoples lives rather mundane reading. Still I do try not to create threads pointing this out to everybody as people tend to get a bit uppity when they are told their lives are rather ordinary. Especially expats - who as a group tend to think they are special in some way. See I told you, if you are going to sneer, sneer big!

Ya know - right now you two look (read) like a right couple of wankers!

Both of you, sitting in your undies and string vests, typing away under the single light of a swaying, naked, bulb.

And I say this with entertainment in mind, so don't take it personally!

TG, you seem to be missing the point(s)

1) in order for us to take it personally we'd have to give a FF about your opinion in the first place

2) Alan (if not myself as well) would just consider your post as pointless noise anyway.

Nothing personal of course mate.

You sound like the kind of guy who used to write predictably angsty teenage poetry - always wondered what those people did when they got older, now I know. Playing the aloof pseudo-intellectual on an Expat discussion forum just makes you sound like a melodramatic adolescent girl. I'm genuinely embarrassed for you.

Are you dressed yet? It's hard for me to read what you wrote with that image in my mind. You're not all pale and ginger are you? http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/e...5/handbags.gif

You know how you usually imagine me? well take away the string vest, make the swinging bulb a ceiling fixture and add some three day growth and you're not far off.

You seem uppity, did you think you were special or something? As for the tone of my posts, sneering yes, wankerish, clearly, intellectual and aloof no. That would require me to not engage, which I do - yes BE is pointless, but it's fun, where's the angst in thinking that. And poetry is for twats.

We survived your recent vacation;)

Why cant people just put up and shut up.

If people want to inform otherpeople that some UK icon has passed on, then why not let them. Generally its people unlikely to be reported in the Canadian press, or people who are known globally who touched on the public in a way that people want to recognise. If its not your cup of tea, then simply dont open the thread. Im not into the whole celebrity circus, but so what if others are, if it entertains them wheres the harm.

If people want to share that they have sold their house, or are expecting a child, then either ignore it, or share their joy or concerns, whatever works for you. It takes a while to replace family and friends, for some the posters here are an early replacement for that, so why not share if you want to shout it from the rooftops how happy you are?

What I do object to is when opposing viewpoints degenerate into bickering, name calling and personal abuse.

Too many people here seem to think that the world will end if they dont post something....anything, just to let us all know they are still alive. Something about "noisy gongs or clanging cymbals" comes to mind. Im not much for the bible, but that bit resonates with me.

Please, keep it civil. You all know the rules by now.

So just a question on the "wankerish" bit. Just a tendency to be a wanker, so not a complete wanker then?;)

Actually - enjoying this thread. I haven't seen anyone being abusive on it.

There are occasional non-wanker posts. You just have to look for them;)
