Internet Forums & Stalking....

LinkedIn has some weird "security" settings.
Last week I was trying tostalk find someone that I haven't spoken to in YEARS. I'd googled their name, let's say it was Joe Smith... the first link was for LinkedIn. I clicked it, then LinkedIn just gave me the page "Joe S. Upgrade to see full name and profile!" and I couldn't see any of Joe's profile. Boo. I tried a few ways to get around it, but gave up.
A few hours later, I decided to try something else - searched for him using LinkedIn's normal search function instead of Google, and bam, full profile, right up in front of me, including the full name.
Genius, LinkedIn. Well done.

An individual can never really hide from anyone on LinkedIn.
I'm a master of finding people on it. It's a dull exercise. I have it open 9 till 5 (or 10 till 4.45). I track down people I didn't know existed and build organisation charts. Then you figure out their email address structure and of you go.
It's got to be the least interesting place to stalk someone though. I mean if you're lucky there is a pic and then what? An embellished list of jobs and qualifications?
One is far better pulling up a high chair at Hooters for amusement.

Let the doxing begin
(I am of course saying this is complete jest, would not wish that kind of thing on anyone)

Not at this stage. I'd say I'm one piece of information away from having a chance. I really don't know or remember a thing about you.

An acquaintance of mine showed up as one of the three people I should get in touch with today on Linkedin.
I guess he is in my address book. I haven't exchanged an email with him in at least 10 years and probably never directly..he would have been in a group email message for my adult football team.
I ran into him on Saturday. I don't think I've seen him in about 7 or 8 years. He has no common Linkedin contacts with me.
Any explanation for this?

I browsed around my linked in and apparently nobody I actually know and have contact with use the site and they kept asking me to send an invitation to join, but goodness they must have thought every single person I have ever emailed was someone I knew, page after page of complete strangers that I have never met.
I assume they are people I had sent resumes to over the years.
Other then 1 former manager who is climbing the ranks of management at the company, I was unable to find anyone else I actually knew or worked with.

Maybe, after he saw you, he typed your name into linkedin?

That could be the case. I can see who viewed my profile and he didn't unless he went into stealth/incognito mode. It is all quite mysterious. I just confirmed and the last email he was copied on that I got was 2008 and he was one of many in that.
With this kind of data mining going on with Linkedin, I'm glad I never got Facebook.

The difference between Linked In and Facebook in my opinion is that increasingly, professionally, you need to have a public, Linked In profile. Facebook for me at least, is about privately sharing stuff with friends/family. Of course you can, as many do, choose to live your life publically on FB and share the selfies, drunken ramblings and minutae of your life will all. But you'd be an idiot or a millennial to do so.

Linkedin is useful. I get lots of work-related emails from people I've never heard of. Linkedin is my first port of call. I work on the assumption that, if the person is connected to someone I know well, the due diligence has been done for me.

I have no use for Facebook. I use email or the phone (neither of which cost me a cent).

Agree largely about LI and people that are connected to someone you know but it's not an infallible rule. I received a network request from some random marketing person that was linked to a former colleague of mine today. I didn't need to participate in "a virtual community of whatever" which is what their profile talked about so hit the big X button instead.

Oh I'm sure there is some facebook group for paintroller nipple abusers that you'd profit from joining.

You've encapsulated facebook perfectly with its selfies, drunken ramblings and minutae.

I tend to avoid the people who want to connect with me that have over 500+ contacts already. They won't miss you if you don't connect with them.
