It does work just fine. We got ou passports just over a week after we applied.

I was genuinely impressed with how quickly we got our first passports
It was a matter of days I recall
They let Ben hand in and collect mine and even overlooked the fact I'd forgotten to sign it in one place
Compared to the cost of renewing my British passport , not too bad either
My only gripe is the 5 year expiry
Can't see what needs changing personally

It's one of the reasons I have been waiting to get a passport, as I don't like the 5 year expiry.

Public servants are being canned in large numbers. In many cases, it's a matter of cutting out deadwood, which is a good thing. In others, cuts are being made where the work actually needs to be done. It gets farmed-out to the private sector, which hires the people who were doing the work in the first place. Without all the cushy government-funded benefits, natch.
Sound familiar?

My other reply seems to have got lost in cyberspace
Im guessing that this move will be just Passport Canada staff moving over to CIC and retaining their current employment, pay and benefits. I cannot honestly see the passport side being privatized per se ie non Govt employees.
With the introduction of the 10 year passport there will be less work for them so not as many staff will be required. As people retire they will not replace them until they meet the X amount of employees required to do this job.
Will it now become CIC & Passport Canada and therefore all the letterheads will need to be changed along with other branding which will cost money
A good decision lets hope it works as efficiently as it does now and that they keep the offices open as opposed to making all applications and renewals online.

The dreadfully inefficient, typically Canadian, public funded Canadian passport office in St. John's recently issued a replacement and a first time passport for my kids in 3 days, including time to mail them to us. I don't know how we can live with such inefficiency. Thank gawd the Harper Govt is here to save us.

Countries should do away with antiquated paper passports and start using iris scanning or possibly microchips. No need to renew and they could keep track of people for tax and criminal purposes too. It's Brave Brave New World. Failing that, maybe a passport as iPhone app.

Lots of privacy advocates against the biometrics for certain documents.
Wasnt there just a story about a phone app being able to read and record details such as that by merely scanning a bank card which you have in your pocket?

News Release — Improving passport services for Canadians
Ottawa, May 8, 2013 — Plans to expand passport services and make them more convenient and efficient were announced today by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney and Human Resources and Skills Development Minister Diane Finley.
Effective July 2, primary responsibility for Passport Canada will move from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). This sensible move is in line with the duties CIC already performs, such as determining Canadian citizenship.
Bearing in mind the various threads on the forum from people waiting years and months for visas etc to be processed by CIC. Is passing passport services to CIC, I can not possibly see how this could go wrong?
Anyone waiting for their passport back, dont worry it will be in the post sometime next year

I think privatising Passport Canada as about much sense as privatising CBSA!

I might get paid more and get a bonus like some of those in the private sector
Im not saying it wont ever be privatized but would love to see a company take it over and see what their initial costs for running CBSA would be.
Sort of like G4S at the London Olympics
