Went out for my morning coffee.

The pavements are dangerous and very slippery where I am downtown.

Thankfully I have power or I don't know what I'd be doing now. If you have power my advice is chill out until the thaw.

What thaw? Tomorrow's low will be minus fifteen. The day after that, high of minus ten

We are in the same town but have had no power for the past 6 hours. We have lit the fire, luckily we cut down a couple of ailing trees in the summer so have some firewood, and have broken out the Christmas booze. Actually turning into quite a good day!

Excellent! I don't see the point of driving into town when the police are asking everyone to stay off the roads and hospitals are asking people not to try to get there if injuries aren't serious.

We were? I'm just back home now. Took me five goes to get only half way up the drive. The car is now parked on 6 inches of ice and snow layers.

No power in Lower Ajax, and none in Oshawa where I am working, the Oshawa hospital is on emergency lighting.

Roads are not to bad, it's safer to drive than walk at the mo

300,000 with no power in Toronto, and wind is forecast.

Yes, if you work in a hospital in Toronto. The forecast is more freezing drizzle and winds 20k gusting to 40k then dying down by midnight. If that wind brings down more trees and power lines widening the blackout or prolonging it a state of emergency will no doubt be declared, and then the army will get rolling. It will be on the news.

No, not the big city. Bad weather usually filters out the not so serious without having to make any requests and asking the not so serious not to attend is risky.

That makes sense, especially from a liability point of view. The request was made on CBC same time as the police asked drivers to stay off the roads. I can forsee ERs being flooded with people slipping and breaking bones because they showed roads and sidewalks are a sheet of ice in downtown Toronto. When it was like that in Regina 2 years ago and I broke my leg it took 2 days to get in to see a surgeon but then they admitted me right away.
By 8pm deputy mayor Kelly says his 200 salt trucks have done all they can and he considers arterial roads safe. When he said the word safe he looked a little unsure. :-) The tally in Montreal is 5 dead in 5 car crashes according to a CBC reporter.

Apparently it may take 72 hours to fix the outage.

Shame. A lot of people stressing about Christmas.
