I love the Olympics because...

Why else would I be up at 3 o'clock in the morning, drinking beer, eating crap, watching sports people I've never heard of participating in events I know nothing about, but getting really into it and cheering them all along! :D

I also love the winter Olympics but I am not sure when it is on the TV.

I must get a TV guide today.

I've always watched the summer games and rarely the winter version.

My Canadian wife and kids are interested this time so I'm watching a bit too.

I always enjoy them even if not in Canada, which given my complete lack of experience & understanding has always struck me as odd.

Too much ski sunday / torvill & dean as a child.

BTW it is on BBC interactive if anyone needs to catch up - watching snowboarding now.

Of course, given my wii practise over xmas, I should now qualify as a ski-jumper ;)

I saw one or two in the scores listings but I haven't seen any perform.

I've seen both Moguls finals, some skating (speed and dance) and a bit of luge.

Coverage is somewhat one sided.

Is anyone else sick of all the ****grinning, maple leaf waving Canadians on the telly? You sort of expect this kind behaviour from Americans but this has got a bit nauseating.

No. :D

Anyway, what would you expect? You are watching Canadian TV coverage of a (mostly) Canadian crowd watching Canadian athletes competing in the Olympics In Canada!

I mean. Duh! :p

If it's nauseating why do you subject yourself to it? you don't have to tune in, just switch telly off. :p

But to answer your question, I love seeing the grinning, maple leaf waving Canadians on telly, all adds to the atmos. :):D:thumbsup:

LOL, naw, I'm cheering for Canada, Great Britain and NZ. I wouldn't mind seeing all three on the podium at any time...:D

Yeah I have hardly seen Brits too, I watched a GB figure skating pair yesterday but that's about all...

And what do you expect will happen in London in 2012? Exactly the same, except there will be twice as many grinning, waving Brits or don't the Brits take pride in holding the games/their athletes being successful .

The Germans are doing really well aren't they? Everytime I see the ones at the top it's always the German flag in the top 5...unless I'm reading the score board wrong, but Germany seems to be always near the top and asserting itself as a major competitor.

But didn't they have lovely berets at the opening ceremony?

Am enjoying the games a lot, this is a fun place to be right now (as for Brits, we're going to watch the GB curling team on Wednesday). Heading up to Whistler on Friday to get some cheeky skiing in, and to see if I can find a surreptitious vantage point to observe the men's super-G.

Was somewhat indifferent beforehand largely due to media Olympic evangelising fatigue, but once we saw the torch go past our house last Friday it all became exciting again!

Cheers, Iain

The Canadians are always banging on about their sense of fair play, decorum and generally not being knobends but from what I can see, they come across as hypocritical ones.

Oh lucky you! I'd love to be there, there are some events I would have liked to be at.

Yes, very jaunty berets on the GB team, what was that about?:D Looked sailorish but cute too.

It's the same in NZ. They rant and rave about being a rugby nation and loving the game until England won the Rugby World Cup and then the silence was deafening.

So cheering for their athletes' successes is not fair play and therefore hypocritical. So will that make Brits hypocritical in 2012 when citizens of the reputed home of fair play and decorum, grin, cheer and wave when its athletes win medals?

Re: I love the Olympics because...

There's been much excitment and rivalry among my family, not that I quite know what they're shouting about. They're a mixture of Swiss and Americans. Little has been said about the Canadians except that they've cheated and their results shouldn't really count.

Is anyone watching the speed skating?

Thought not, because the piss up in brewery crowd running this laugh-in have just managed to ruin the ice in the Richmond whatsit.

You couldn't make this up.

No, its just imo they are just way over the top with it all.

On secondary point, why are the Canadian speed skaters wearing cling film on their bottoms?

Surely that's obvious? Given that the other skaters are bending over to sniff their arses, it's only considerate.

And so are all the other countries who get to host the Olympics. It's not just Canada. And I bet Britain will be over the top with it all come 2012. I hope so anyway.

BristolUK Feb 15th 2010 1:46 pm

Re: I love the Olympics because...

I don't know what will happen when the games are in England but I suspect that the coverage won't quite be to the near exclusion of non 'home' athletes as I've seen over the last couple of days.

BBC has consistently interviewed the winners of events at past games no matter where from in addition to Brits and has also had foreign ex athletes as members of their commentary/analysis teams.

Obviously coverage is rightly geared to the home viewing audience but I've not seen it quite like it's been here so far. Maybe I've missed the interviews with all the winners

Perhaps now that Canada has the elusive first gold medal on home soil () coverage may be a little more inclusive.

spankysparkle Feb 15th 2010 7:14 pm

Re: I love the Olympics because...

germany is the same. they only ever interview german athletes and if there are more than two events on at the same time they will show the most popular event (skiing in whatever form).

i like that the canadians are 'over the top' with their cheering and flags etc. after all, wouldn't it be nice to see the canadians kick some ass?

Re: I love the Olympics because...

I have been enjoying watching the events, its on most channels so its hard not to watch but I have seen events I would never have thought of viewing before. I have been cheering for Canada all the way, mainly because I haven't seen anyone from GB or Ireland but also because its hard not to go with the crowd.
There is one negative to all this, the noise in downtown. Its after 1 am and I am being kept awake by the shouting as people go by.
