Re: I love the Olympics because...
When Bilodeau won the gold I was excited. When CTV ran a feature about his brother wth CP I was moved deeply. His brother, with disablities, has motivated Bilodeau to greatness in his sport.
It moved me so much because my oldest child has Down syndrome, and I would hope that one day my younger chldren would say that Peter has inspired them. I'm also self employed, and staying motivated in business and reaching goals in business is very similar to sports. Christina Groves, who won bronze in the 3000m long track speed skating said something quite profound in her interview afterwards. She said that she used to believe that if she felt good, or on a high, during the race, it meant she had performed well. Conversley, if she felt rough during the race she expected to do badly. However, her experience taught her that her emotions throughout the race had no bearing on how she skated, or how she placed. As much as I enjoy the spectacle and the sports, it's the little nuggets from champions like that keep me interested in the games. |
Re: I love the Olympics because...
The snowboarding is freaking awesome to watch.
And I watched the speed skaters racing and that was kewl too, especially when the French guy tried to over take the Italian (?) and they both took a tumble and crashed into the barrier right before the finish line, lol.:D And the other guy that lost the slipstream on the main three was a Kiwi. Oh dear.:( I didn't know who it was and then they said "New Zealand." Oh great!:frown: lol. |
Re: I love the Olympics because...
Shaun White is phenomenal, what a show he put on! Brill.:thumbsup::thumbup:

I like the fact that, apart from downtown Vancouver the restaurants and bars are nearly empty.

Re: I love the Olympics because...
How has the "30% reduction in commuter traffic" been going?

I was laughing my butt off at the curling this morning. What pray tell is that?
It's like "bowls on ice" or something, and it was reminding me of darts for some quirky reason, I dunno why... |
Re: I love the Olympics because...
Haven't been loving the Olympics much this week as on earlies. But a long weekend coming up in which to commandeer the telly and catch up.

Almost every town in Canada has a curling rink with the cities having multi facilities. Members of curling clubs are super friendly people and it's a great way to meet and socialize. And believe it or not, it requires great skill to do what the Olympic curlers do. |

I hadn't ever seen it before and after watching dare devil stuff like snowboarding and luge and ski jumping, it just looked odd and I didn't get it. But I quite like the sound of the "social scene" you've described which surrounds it. I really would like to take up some winter sports when I come over...Do women do it too? (I only saw guys this morning) |

Yes women do it and there's a women's competition in the Olympics. It has been on TV already and will be again. Very often both partners/spouses are members of the same club and each may play in their own gender group or in doubles and mixed doubles.
I'll have to have a gander when the women come back on to play, cheers. |

Re: I love the Olympics because...
I was laughing my butt off at the curling this morning. What pray tell is that? Well it's a British (well, Scottish) invention, for starters, and has been around for about 500 years! We went to see the women's round robin session last night at the Olympic Center and it was a lot of fun! Alas, Team GB went down to Sweden in a close match, but after spanking the Russians 10-3 earlier today they're still 2-1 up so far in the competition. Curling is also one of the only Winter Olympic sports the Brits have any chance of a medal in (and it's a half-decent chance, too). Cheers, Iain |

As for curling, I cannot explain it but I am hooked watching it. No idea about the scoring or rules but watching it regardless. |

Re: I love the Olympics because...
We went downtown Vancouver tonight it was very crowded, but we got half pissed at Joe Fortes and then pretty pissed at the Sutton Place hotel bar, not a bad evening. I love the Olympics.

Saw the BBC's trailer for Vancouver 2010 yesterday evening on BBC world. That's pretty cool - the graphics department at the BBC know their stuff.

because....the atmosphere at Pacific Coliseum tonight was awesome!
I even allowed myself to be patriotic and waved my union jack flag for the British couples. The volume when the Canadians Virtue and Moir overtook Davis and White was phenomenal - I felt a surge of Canadian pride for the first time :) Once-in-a-lifetime experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it  |

I don't know what will happen when the games are in England but I suspect that the coverage won't quite be to the near exclusion of non 'home' athletes as I've seen over the last couple of days.
BBC has consistently interviewed the winners of events at past games no matter where from in addition to Brits and has also had foreign ex athletes as members of their commentary/analysis teams. Obviously coverage is rightly geared to the home viewing audience but I've not seen it quite like it's been here so far. Maybe I've missed the interviews with all the winners  Perhaps now that Canada has the elusive first gold medal on home soil () coverage may be a little more inclusive. |
Re: I love the Olympics because...
Absolutely loved the Ski Cross. Real exciting stuff! Sitting down to watch the Canada v USA hockey game, albeit I already know the score:frown:
