Wonderful! They are beautiful birds. We had them here in Bragg Creek AB last year, couldnt believe we would get them here. So I guess you know we are putting lots of feeders out this year. Last year they were just on the roses and delphiniums.

We saw them back in February, I think quite a few stay here year-round.

Here is a picture of a nesting violet throated humming bird that I took in Costa Rica in January. Also one of an abandoned nest which my guide found. The eggs are about the size of a baked bean !! The nests are so tiny and so well camouflaged that I would never have seen it if hadn't been pointed out to me by my guide.

put my feeder out yesterday and had some at the feeder today. I used to like seeing my first barn swallow in the UK as it meant summer was here.

Has anyone had any in Calgary (this year or in the past)? What parts of the city have seen them?
I remember when I was on Home Care, I was visiting a condo nr Market Mall, and the homeowner said he'd had one buzzing around his hanging basket out on his veranda .... He was amused and surprised cos the flowers were not even real ... maybe they were red though?

Yes they do. You can find various species of humming birds through out North America in spring and summer, including Alaska and the Yukon. (You can see them year round in Central and South America as well as species we dont see much of in North America.)
I have a few coming and investigating the red bird feeder thats outside for seed eating birds, they seem to think its a flower. (I'm in Chilliwack, BC)

The above link will tell you what species reside in your province.
