A risible 19%. I find that insulting. My antique pocket watch is probably worth more than the quiz author makes in a week (not to mention my Raymond Weil and Tissot back-ups). I wear shirts with double cuffs and proper cufflinks (not to mention mother-of-pearl collar thingies).

OK, I hate horses. That probably lost me a few points.

You were doing quite well until you brought up Cardin.

Posh people wear Church, Cheaney, Loake or Docs.

Raymon Weil and Double cuff..seriously? 80s called, they want their goods back.

It's all Marc Jacobs now, and single cuffs..checkout Matthew McCaunaughey on the cover of the latest GQ mag

I have none of that but still scored 35%. Which is wrong because you are surely way posher than me. (But not nearly as posh as that Oakvillian chap...)

So "Posh = Stupid" then....buying a 4 grand watch that does the same job as the $20 one?

I very rarely buy watches. They have been gifts from girlfriends/wives. Good watches last a long time.

The pocket watch was an exception. I had a longing for one and I had a very clear idea of what I wanted. One came along and I bought it (and not for four grand!).

Marc Jacobs? Arriviste!

You are mistaking fashion for style. Easy mistake. A gentleman wears French cuffs in the city, but will probably be wearing a Tattersall check shirt with button cuffs under his sportsjacket when dressed down. For really grubby jobs, maybe an old rugby or polo jersey...

Proper posh people don't read magazines, except possibly a subscription to Country Life and, of course, the Racing Post, to which they will have switched grudginly since Sporting Life stopped being about horses. They certainly won't have looked at Gentlemen's Quarterly since it stopped being quarterly and stopped being about gentlemen.

Matthew McConaughey is not posh. He is American.

Is there even a concept of "posh" outside Britain?

That's what I was getting at in my last sentence. Foreigners can't be posh. They can be rich, famous, possibly both, but posh? They probably try to spread their marmalade with the butter knife, for heaven's sake.

Easily done.

I wish I hadn't chucked my Halloween edition of Private Eye. There was a cartoon in it that reduced me to tears of laughter (which is not something that happens often).

Anyone still got a copy of the PE issue? I'd love to get that cartoon.

Why use one word when four will do! Indeed, why limit oneself to one quartet when a second quartet will explain the idea just as well. :)

Sorry, misread. Thought you were looking for the cover rather than the issue itself.

It's like the 'class' thing. It's not just the UK, other places have the same distinctions, just different terms.

Wrong side of the tracks is another for the US.

Only that in Canada, there is no "way of speaking" to indicate class, it's more like I have a big truck, 4 wheeler and a cottage...I am class and better than the rest. Oh, and I might have gone to the U of T or McGill

I've long doubted that you're in the army, for a while I've thought it improbable that you have umpteen passports, secret identities and security clearances. Now I doubt that you've even been to Canada.

On what planet is a commuter school for Asian students, such as the U of T, posh?

Wow....another bigoted / xenophobic comment by you. What is interesting is, you don't seem to realize that you might be offending people  A lot of those "Asian students" are smarter than you are, and probably more worldly

You doubting that a service member is irrelevant, and trying to validate that for you is just a waste of time.

My point was in relation to Canada and the "class system" here, not the UK. What is Canada's response to Cambridge and Oxford? Perhaps at time you need to pause and read the whole post, before you nit pick and go off on your bigoted rants

An immigrant in another country, having issues with other races? Now that is just classic

Queen's. Perhaps King's. But, as a colony, Canada sends it's richest and cleverest students abroad.

I'll compile all your bigoted comments for a rainy day, and perhaps create a thread for it. I like how you always speak for the whole of Canada, because of course from your place in Guelph or Toronto.....you are part of the conversation in every single rich home, when it comes to sending their kids to university.

Thanks for coming out...have a nice day.

I think there is a posh way of speaking in Canada. It's a slower and more precise speech, using a better vocabulary and no slang. Users tend to talk more quietly.

I wouldn't go as far as saying they sound lah-di-dah but you should hear some of the more elderly, better dressed 'ladies' around here speak. :D

Yes.

Different posh. Not plum in mouth, just relative to others.

Much like the UK.

A lot of people think my mum sounds posh. I doubt the lady of the manor thinks so.

Nevertheless, UR has a point. There is no Canadian equivalent of RP and more importantly, no general mindset of judging the other person's accent for class.

It's interesting to me that this thread has touched on where "posh people" send their kids to school. I'd actually mostly agree with dbd, that there really aren't Canadian equivalents to Oxbridge. Maybe Queen's, maybe McGill, but posh Canadians study at, well, Oxford or Cambridge, or Harvard or Yale or Princeton.

But that raises the broader point. While there's not necessarily a "posh" accent in Canada (though I'm not sure I agree with this statement), there is definitely a set of linguistic clues to a speaker's background. Mostly, these are around choice of words, breadth of vocabulary, lack of swearing; and enunciation rather than pronunciation. Much of this is directly linked to education rather than social class per se, but of course there's an inextricable connection between the two.

I'm with bats. It's more seeking negatives in Canada, someone who speaks as well as say, me, sounds relatively posh here because I don't, like, duh, bimbo along, I can manage a sentence without a **** in it, I don't have the fractured syntax of someone new to speaking English and I don't have an accent recognisably from a region of Canada. However, placed next to a posh cradle I sound as much of a peasant as Rob Ford. In the political arena, I suggest Peter MacKay is posh (for someone raised abroad).
