How much money did/will you arrive with?

The subject of much debate on other threads: how much money are British immigrants to canada arriving with? Is it a fortune or a pittance?
Please do the poll. It is anonymouse - everyone only gets to see the overall results not your own individual net worth!

The amounts are per family, not per person.

Ahem. They were per head in the other thread.

yes, okay, but now we have the chance to collect some "real" data it makes more sence to use per-family figures doesn't it? otherwise I am left with the dilema of deciding which proportion to allocate to my wife, children etc.

I think the question could be slightly better phrased as 'how much money did you bring over to start your new life in Canada?' Many arrive with not much but transfer a sum over at some point, usually connected to sale of a property in UK. For us this was a year after arriving.

Like it. What does it mean?

I came with about $55k and left a similar amount in a bank in the UK, which I continued to use. Which number do I use?

The problem with the "per family" figure is that we then need to know how many people are in each family in order to arrive at an average figure per immigrant. I suppose we could just assume six or eight.

Good point. Like Souv says I don't think I can edit the question now though.

I would go with AX's suggestion and use the concept of the amount of money you brought in total to start your new life rather than what you had with you the day you landed. If everyone else is okay with that?

I think there are some figures on that somewhere though. Both numbers of people coming in and the average family size. I will see if I can find them.

Don't worry about it. We can't taint this unrepresentative sample with general averages!

Quite. Will the real millionaries please identify themselves?

And did you move to Canada with the aspiration of becoming a millionaire (i.e. by doing the currency conversion)?
