Fairly lightweight duvet. The temperature in our condo never seems to change much between 19 and 21 C even without us switching on our controls. Scary.

Major source of contention in our house is the heating.

I'm happy with the thermostat in the daytime being set at 19 degrees then down to 15 at night.

My Canadian OH insists that it's minimum 22 degrees all the time whilst she wanders around in single layers and we receive astronomical gas bills...

Oh - and definitely duvet by the way.

Ours is a Carrier Infinity 96, gas job. A rating up to 96.6 AFUE!

Sorry missed this one earlier.

We got a Lennox G61V Natural Gas rated up to 95% AFUE it also has a DC variable speed motor for the fan.

Then to throw away any savings gained by moving to the high efficiency furnace, we had air conditioning installed at the same time.:p:eek::eek:

We have turned to comforter/sheet people:blink:

At the moment we don't have any heat at night but as the temp dips, it will be set to come on at about 15/16 degrees - for two reasons, 1 to keep the chill off and 2 the tortoises need the heat to stop them freezing and dying.

Sheet plus lightweight duvet (saves having to change the duvet cover, easier to wash sheets). Electric blanket in winter just to warm the bed up, our bedroom is paticularly cold. I like a slightly-open window. Temp is set for 16 overnight, 19 at 6:45 am, up to 20 at 8:00 am.

I don't get to sleep at night for half the week  as I work 3 13hr nightshifts/week.

But I'm definitely a duvet kinda girl. OH likes it cooler thane me and can't stand anything above a 4.5tog duvet (ALL year round!!) so I've got a single electric blanket so it doesn't intrude over to his space!! Our heating is also fairly low and not on all day so when i get home and sleeping no heating so I've got the leccie blanket up so it's REALLY warm when I get into bed.

Just off to bed now in fact!!!!

Sheet or nothing in the summer (aircon off, only ceiling fan occasionally)
Sheet and Canadian comforter in Spring/Autumn
British goose down duvet and no sheet in Winter - heating always off overnight, same as you

But what do you cover yourselves with at night? Are you old fashioned British with sheets and blankets? Modern British with duvets. Or more Canadian with sheets and comforter and heating the house at night??

No 11:11pm in Newfoundland. 'sides the alarm went off at 5:15am yesterday so I could get up and get Mrs AX to her 7:15am flight. What's really annoying is that I forgot to reset her alarm clock last night and it went of this morning at 5:15am:mad:

Oooh - tortoises! My absolute passion when we lived in the UK but all our adults were rescues and/or Customs seizures so couldn't be brought over with us. If our decision to move hadn't been so rushed I could have planned ahead and kept a couple of our cb hatchlings, but spotting this place for sale in July and moving in November meant a few harsh decisions, including rehoming our torts :(

What species do you have? Here are some pics of our F.nabeulensis hatchlings taking their first look at the world

Mine has a similar opinion, but if you're already heating the house by sixty degrees from -40 to +20, heating it another two degrees shouldn't make much difference to the gas bill.

Our fancy high-efficiency furnace has a warning about not setting the thermostat below 16C with furnace heating enabled, but doesn't explain what disastrous things are supposed to happen if you do.

We too had to rehome Ali baba and Fatima (Tunisian Spur Thighed) when we left the Uk. Really didn't think we would have torts here as the costs are so prohibitive and the winters long.

BUT We went to a local reptile show and was cooing over all the torts. We came to a stand the the guy had loads, 2 Russian, a box Full of Hermanns and another box full of Sulcatas. The Russian were $300 a pair - but they're not very pretty, the Hermanns were $300 ea and then the Sucata's well they were $180 ea so we got two:eek: I have since found a website that sells torts really cheap (probably illeagals?) I would love an Indian Star but at $1500 or more hubby thinks I am mad.

We should really have got 1 Hermanns, but hubby said it wasn't fair just to have one as we know they like to snuggle up at night. I only know what I have read on the net and in various books. At the moment my babies fit into the palms of my hands, in about 10 years they will weigh about 70lbs and have a heated shed to live in. How cool is it going to be to have massive torts roaming the garden:thumbsup: I think we need to get an acreage - our garden won't be big enough for them:eek:

Batty - sorry for hijacking your thread:o

Yes, apologies from me too :)

But Piff Poff...Sulcata in Canada??? Are you crazy? Your estimate of 70lbs in 10 years is good - that would be really nice slow growth for a sulcata - but I think you'll be looking for pretty huge accomodation when they reach full size and you could be looking at 2 x 200lb tortoises...around 30" carapace length...that don't hibernate and so need indoor housing for a large proportion of the year!!! I'm a total tortoise nut but in this case I can honestly say, rather you than me!

It will morph into an electric furnace and your heating bills from then on will be over 400% more.
