How do you sleep at night???

No, not an enquiry over how clean your conscience is.

But what do you cover yourselves with at night? Are you old fashioned British with sheets and blankets? Modern British with duvets. Or more Canadian with sheets and comforter and heating the house at night??

We have our tog 13 goose down duvet and sometimes a bedspread if its cold. We have the furnace set to come on if it gets to below around 12,13 degrees. A Canadian friend who stayed over thought we were pretty odd to have the house so cold.??? We have the bedroom window open a smidge too unless its very cold.

Some argue that if you keep the heat constant then you end up using less energy as you arent heating the house from cold all the time??

What do you reckon????

Personally I sleep on the roof naked but I noticed that the previous owner had the heating set at 68 degrees F. for nightime and 72 for the day. What's that in celsius?

We have sheets, electric blanket and bedspread. Use blanket to take chill off before getting in, very seldom use it overnight.:)

Automatic thermostat turns down to 16C at night and back to 18C in the morning.

We have a half bath off the master bedroom and Mrs_P like to leave that window open at night.

New furnace and thermostat seems to bring temp back up without over heating the house like our old one did.:)

You may want to reconsider the naked bit once winter sets in, it's also more difficult to get up there with the snow and all. :p

68F = 20C
72F = 22.2222222C

A little to warm for me. ;)

What make is your new furnace Steve?
Ours is a Carrier Infinity 96, gas job. A rating up to 96.6 AFUE!

Duvet - I hate sheets.

Automatic Thermostat goes down to 16C at night and up to 20C in morning. Then off back to 16C for the day until just before we come in them it's up to 20C again.

I'll drop it down to 62, too much warmth coming off the roof.

I don't turn on the heat as it never gets cold enough.

I sleep on my back, usually without a pillow, under a duvet... fuzzy flannel in winter.

Fairly lightweight duvet. The temperature in our condo never seems to change much between 19 and 21 C even without us switching on our controls. Scary.

Re: How do you sleep at night???

Major source of contention in our house is the heating.

I'm happy with the thermostat in the daytime being set at 19 degrees then down to 15 at night.

My Canadian OH insists that it's minimum 22 degrees all the time whilst she wanders around in single layers and we receive astronomical gas bills...

Oh - and definitely duvet by the way.

Sorry missed this one earlier.

We got a Lennox G61V Natural Gas rated up to 95% AFUE it also has a DC variable speed motor for the fan.

Then to throw away any savings gained by moving to the high efficiency furnace, we had air conditioning installed at the same time.:p:eek::eek:

We have turned to comforter/sheet people:blink:

At the moment we don't have any heat at night but as the temp dips, it will be set to come on at about 15/16 degrees - for two reasons, 1 to keep the chill off and 2 the tortoises need the heat to stop them freezing and dying.

Re: How do you sleep at night???

Sheet plus lightweight duvet (saves having to change the duvet cover, easier to wash sheets). Electric blanket in winter just to warm the bed up, our bedroom is paticularly cold. I like a slightly-open window. Temp is set for 16 overnight, 19 at 6:45 am, up to 20 at 8:00 am.

Re: How do you sleep at night???

I don't get to sleep at night for half the week  as I work 3 13hr nightshifts/week.

But I'm definitely a duvet kinda girl. OH likes it cooler thane me and can't stand anything above a 4.5tog duvet (ALL year round!!) so I've got a single electric blanket so it doesn't intrude over to his space!! Our heating is also fairly low and not on all day so when i get home and sleeping no heating so I've got the leccie blanket up so it's REALLY warm when I get into bed.

Just off to bed now in fact!!!!

Sheet or nothing in the summer (aircon off, only ceiling fan occasionally)
Sheet and Canadian comforter in Spring/Autumn
British goose down duvet and no sheet in Winter - heating always off overnight, same as you

No 11:11pm in Newfoundland. 'sides the alarm went off at 5:15am yesterday so I could get up and get Mrs AX to her 7:15am flight. What's really annoying is that I forgot to reset her alarm clock last night and it went of this morning at 5:15am:mad:

Oooh - tortoises! My absolute passion when we lived in the UK but all our adults were rescues and/or Customs seizures so couldn't be brought over with us. If our decision to move hadn't been so rushed I could have planned ahead and kept a couple of our cb hatchlings, but spotting this place for sale in July and moving in November meant a few harsh decisions, including rehoming our torts :(

What species do you have? Here are some pics of our F.nabeulensis hatchlings taking their first look at the world

Mine has a similar opinion, but if you're already heating the house by sixty degrees from -40 to +20, heating it another two degrees shouldn't make much difference to the gas bill.

Our fancy high-efficiency furnace has a warning about not setting the thermostat below 16C with furnace heating enabled, but doesn't explain what disastrous things are supposed to happen if you do.

Re: How do you sleep at night???

We too had to rehome Ali baba and Fatima (Tunisian Spur Thighed) when we left the Uk. Really didn't think we would have torts here as the costs are so prohibitive and the winters long.

BUT We went to a local reptile show and was cooing over all the torts. We came to a stand the the guy had loads, 2 Russian, a box Full of Hermanns and another box full of Sulcatas. The Russian were $300 a pair - but they're not very pretty, the Hermanns were $300 ea and then the Sucata's well they were $180 ea so we got two:eek: I have since found a website that sells torts really cheap (probably illeagals?) I would love an Indian Star but at $1500 or more hubby thinks I am mad.

We should really have got 1 Hermanns, but hubby said it wasn't fair just to have one as we know they like to snuggle up at night. I only know what I have read on the net and in various books. At the moment my babies fit into the palms of my hands, in about 10 years they will weigh about 70lbs and have a heated shed to live in. How cool is it going to be to have massive torts roaming the garden:thumbsup: I think we need to get an acreage - our garden won't be big enough for them:eek:

Batty - sorry for hijacking your thread:o

Yes, apologies from me too :)

But Piff Poff...Sulcata in Canada??? Are you crazy? Your estimate of 70lbs in 10 years is good - that would be really nice slow growth for a sulcata - but I think you'll be looking for pretty huge accomodation when they reach full size and you could be looking at 2 x 200lb tortoises...around 30" carapace length...that don't hibernate and so need indoor housing for a large proportion of the year!!! I'm a total tortoise nut but in this case I can honestly say, rather you than me!

It will morph into an electric furnace and your heating bills from then on will be over 400% more.

21 during the day, 17 after 11pm

Sheet only in the summer

Sheet and Blanket in Spring / Early Fall

Sheets and Down Duvet from Ikea in the winter

Perhaps something to do with condensing furnaces and corrosion I suspect if it doesnt cycle enough?

No idea what I'm going to do in Canada.

Here I like no heating and window open (even in winter) and to snuggle up and wrap myself up in the duvet, but OH hates window open and never has any duvet cause I've nicked it all:rofl:.

I was told not to go below 15 degrees in the winter so that any pipes running on the inside of the outside walls wouldn't freeze.... don't know the truth of it would have thought the insulation would stop that.

Re: How do you sleep at night???

Blimey, no wonder my bills are so high. Once I turn the heating on, right now set at 20oC, it's set at the same temp all the time, day or night. I thought it would only 'kick in' if the temp dropped below what you had set it for, and therefore thought this was the best route to go.

That is what it does, but why heat to 20 when everyone is tucked under the duvet at night. In theory thats say a third or a quarter of the the time, and each degree cooler over 24h is 3% off your heating bill, so setting it at 17 overnight for 8 hours could save you 3% off your energy bill. Every 1 degree warmer during the AC season saves about 1% off your energy bill too.

Keeping your filters clean also makes a huge difference on the fan loads and efficiency of the heat exchangers. Once the coils are dirty, they are virtually impossible to get clean again and efficiency suffers. Having the fan on automatically only while the furnace needs it is also a big saver, as are modern multispeed furnace fans.

I was at an energy efficiency seminar last week if you cant tell.;)

Most definately a super-king goose down duvet...:o...but it went in the container last Tuesday!
So now have to sleep on a airbed with a double hollow fibre thing!
Heating, always above 22 day time and 18 at night, run on constant.
I expect heating bills in Canada to be high, even in summer coz we have also included airconditioning!

(On my tummy)

Am definitely a duvet girl, with flannel cover/sheets in the winter for extra coziness.

Turn heating down to 16 at night, but was even advised by the geo-thermal engineer not to turn it down at all but open a window intstead. Hhmmm, then the snow plows would wake me up at 5 am - i dont think so!!!

Could be, it did mention something about reducing the cycling rate. But surely it won't be cycling through the summer if it's turned off?

Re: How do you sleep at night???

I've also been converted to sheets with our new down duvet - and don't seem to get into the tangled mess that I anticipated :p

Heating turned off in bedroom permanently anyway
En-suite window open at every opportunity that windy Cochrane allows
Rest of house down to 16 at night, kicks back in at 7.15am up to 20.
Hubby currently complaining that house and en-suite freezing when he gets up at 6am - might have to compromise somewhere !! ;)

Oh, and on my side - thanks for asking ...
