How do Canadians vent?
This is inspired by another thread where one poster was arguing that, due to the avoidance of all things that may offend, Canada is a dull place to live, whereas another poster was arguing that it makes Canada a pleasant place to live.
This got me thinking about how usually, mild mannered Canadians become absolute nutters once they get behind the wheel of a car, or how said Canadians really love nothing better than a good hard fight in the middle of a hockey game. Other than in the above situations, I have never witnessed a Canadian losing it. Have you and in what circumstances? |

The circumstance was that the Canadian was subjected to a barrage of abuse in a bar based consequent upon her accent. The Londoner intervened and, in the resulting fracas, all parties were ejected. The Canadian than discerned that she had left her stash in the bar. For this she blamed the Londoner. |

They smile nicely and say, "Awesome!"

Re: How do Canadians vent?
Pop to a local Walmart or Canadian Tire, visit Customer Service, once there hang around for a short while, I guarantee you will see Canadian's venting at some poor employee about crap product, limited warranties and Customer Service.
Threats and shouting appear to be popular, along with the promise to never shop at that location again. |

They vent on animals while wearing day-glow orange clothing.

Sometimes you get a good fight going and a game of hockey breaks out around it.

Work in Starbucks for a few months - then you will see how serious a Canadian can be. Coffee is no laughing matter, I tell you.

That's the closest I've come to conflict with a Canadian. Actually, on reflection, I've had a finger aggressively wagged in my face too. It took a great deal of self control not to giggle. |

Back on topic anyway - in my 2.5 years here I have never seen an angry Canadian - actually tell a lie, one, when my friend and I pulled up at the gas pump and he thought it was his turn so he jumped out of his car ran towards ours and started banging on the window. We laughed and the gas attendant came and told him to get back into his car - so he did. |

Re: How do Canadians vent?
With living and working downtown, I would expect to see a fair amount of fighting and people losing it. I don't though. I see people giving each other the finger (usually while driving) and calling each other "idiots". I am continually surprised at the limited vocabulary which Canadians use to insult each other.

Re: How do Canadians vent?
I think a lot of them go home, close the door and either drink or smoke themselves into a stupor, while not forgetting to preach abstinence to others.
|
Re: How do Canadians vent?
they vent by gossiping A LOT .. . I have seen that in the family I married into, at work amongst my colleagues, and in the community we live in.
I am always stunned what I hear about a particular person and then see how tremendously friendly they are with that person once they are present... |
Re: How do Canadians vent?
re the limited vocabulary, I am surprised to hear Canadians calling each other w***ers, quite a bit.
MOH called his son it not so long back and I nearly fainted, apparently it means something different here, a term of affection for doing something silly I think. I explained about the reasons not to use that when we go to the UK. |

not sure about other provinces but in AB its not the law to have to wear the orange. Probably so more people will hope we kill each other ;)

My bosses vent both audibly and violently, its not uncommon for a phone to fly across the office followed by an Oh ***** |
Re: How do Canadians vent?
Try working in a hospital. Canadians lose their rag just the same, sometimes for customers we have to call the police but usually the security guard tying them down with restraints is enough to silence them.

I have had plenty of voicemails left at bizarre times of the night calling me all names under the sun, where they can just shout at the phone lol:rolleyes: |

I feel better for that. |

It surprises me not at all that Canadian hospitals hire security guards. Maybe they should hire some more, you know, medical people, so that folk don't get massively pissed-off when they've been sitting in ER for eight hours. That's just the urgent cases.
I feel better for that. two of our nearby hospitals are laying off people. 117 nurses at Peterborough. I feel your pain |

You might call it whingeing. We might call it complaining so that something gets changed. This is how things improve. Canadians put up with crap because 'that's the way it's always been done' and nothing changes.
