Great thread - I'm not moving until early next year, but I was wondering which ones were the best.

Re: help ladies, which canadian washer?
We wanted the Whirlpools but walked away with the GEs cos it saved us a few bob. We went for a mid-sized drum which will comfortably do a full clothes weekly wash for a family 2 big ones and a littl'un. It will also do a queen sized duvet or about 3-4 pillows. There is a bigger model if you want to wash king sized duvets or bigger loads.
It only uses enough water to cover the contents so if you have a small load it saves energy. We also bought the dryer - they both work great - so I don't regret saving the money and not getting the Whirlpool. I'd go for whatever one has money off! The top loaders have traditionally been rough on clothes (ripping/catching etc) and have been high water/money hoggers. I think that is changing due to the popularity of the front loaders now catching on over here. A new-style top loader with a decent energy rating and the new style drum/turny thingie, may save you some money also. :) Try one of those consumer watchdog type sites also to see what they say on efficiency - anything that cuts down on those electricity bills gets my vote. :) |
Re: help ladies, which canadian washer?
Thank you ladies your help is much appreciated I was looking at the whirlpool basically because I'd heard of that brand but thought if anybody knows what brand was good versus the british machines you would know.
Guys I'm sorry I left you out on this discussion but if you're anything like my husband you think the laundry fairy visits once a week and haven't got a clue what those weird machines in the basement do! Fiona |
Re: help ladies, which canadian washer?
I have a question for all who have arrived in the past year or two and purchased a washer dryer pair.
Have any of you lashed out and purchased an LG set and if so what do you think? They seem to be substantially higher in price than all the others. As high as $2300 for just the washer and another $1250 for the dryer.:eek::eek: I was wondering what they do for the extra money and if they are worth the extra cost? |

Forgot to add that, whilst not the most cheap model on the market, one of the reasons we were swayed on to the Whirlpool Duet was the 'fuel economy' - like ladymoose says, the model only uses as much water as it needs for that particular wash - and is generally more energy and water efficient. The matching dryer is better than most but still horrendous on the energy front - they all are. However, I relent for fluffy towels! |

Mind I haven't looked that closely as our old top loader Maytag is still going strong.;) |

The quality and choice of the clothes washing detergent is definitely one of the few things I'd really moan about not having here in Canada.:blink:
Mrs C has been known to moan about most things, but seems happy enough with this aspect of her life. If things came out less than perfectly clean, you can be quite sure she'd have "mentioned" it. Using a considerable amount of emphasis, I'd imagine. Edit: Oooh! This was my 2000th post. I am about to celebrate in the usual way. |

I believe so Steve - and Maytag are reputed to go on forever, aren't they ? You might not need to go shopping soon ;)
Purchased November 1993 so the old Maytag is coming up to 14 years and so far still going strong. Regarding detergent we use Tide Free powder, can't seem to use anything else as both Mrs_P and myself react to any of the others with itching and scratching. We do have a water softener that seems to help a lot as it reduces the need for a lot of detergent. No fabric softeners at all for Mrs_P's clothes and only a very small amount in with my socks and stuff. :o |

OMG.
If it isn't bad enough that the men talk about trucks all the time, women (OK, and a few men) are obsessed about washing. Get a housemaid and a dolly peg I say. Oh and a life. This is really not what I am coming to Canada for |

If you don't like, don't read the thread. |
