Well ....some of it partly to blame on that sort of namby-pamby teacher, and other oiks that let their own xenophobia and prejudices get in the way of stuff like this

Say for lack of argument Santa is White, who gives a toss...as long as he/she is not doing a Jerry Sandusky on the kids

I had written

Telling kids, of any colour, that Santa is white was clearly bad form but what I find truly hilarious is the teacher getting into trouble over it, and what would have happened had the teacher simply told the kids the truth that there is no such creature? Would he have been equally disciplined over it or does this silly pathetic incident have a racial aspect to it?

My sarcasm and attempt at humour was lost clearly lost here

of course there is no racial element to it

Come on now boys and girls, we are commenting on some fictitious character after all. That this story even made the news is pathetic and downright silly

-----------------------------------------------------------

but now to the serious stuff

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-echochambers-25410015

horror of horrors
Is nothing sacred?
Drunken Santas

How does mama explain that to her young kids?

First, there was the debate over whether jolly old St Nick is white (Fox's Megyn Kelly says yes; the rest of the world says huh?). Then, on Saturday, lower Manhattan, central London and countless other bar districts around the globe were overrun by tens of thousands of Santas, sexy elves and various other holiday-themed revellers. They were drinking, dancing and, at least on one occasion, fighting in the streets.

Still in UK at the moment (sob sob) Soon to hit Calgary 2014  but here's the thing. Most if not all of our schools now are NOT, I say NOT permitted to hold the traditional nativity for the kiddies to enact. According to a conversation I had with a teacher recently its to do with not being seen to be taking into consideration ALL religions

So they are acting out scenes from films such as Oliver for example ! UK now a multi race country

Its all gone PC mad ! I know its off topic...but just saying !

Bemsee

Could you, please, quote one shred of believable evidence for this ludicrous assertion?

Of all the many parents of primary school children I know in the UK (and there are several across the country, from inner London to rural Scotland) EVERY SINGLE ONE has some sort of overtly Christmassy celebration in their school. It may not be a nativity play - it may be a carol concert, or a musical, or some other celebration. But I have never, ever, seen any evidence of the Daily Mail-esque bleating that Christmas celebrations have somehow been banned because because they are offensive to non-Christians. It simply doesn't happen, either before or since my move to Canada. Not ever. Anywhere.

I think everyone noticed that you were trying to be funny. Shame you just ended up looking a bit racist like the teacher in your story.

That is what i like about discussion forums: throwing ideas to the wind and waiting for the reaction. Sometimes with amusement, other times sadly not so. Myself, I am well aware of what some racist incidents amount to, having been one of 5 or six 'whites' in a school full of 'browns', where we were 'outnumbered' about 80 to one, and for some 4 years.

That was some 50 PLUS years ago and I still can recall such incidents.

I find that some people will not take matters at face value, but will see a racial element in a story and, failing that, will look for one

I don't care one way or another

I spent 4-5 years in India as a teenager. We were whites, they were browns

or

I was Christian and there were mainly Hindus and Muslims, if you prefer

I saw my fair share of hatred, same colour, different religions, really no different than Ulster

I know what you mean mate. Being Welsh and living in England for over 15 years as a racial minority really opened my eyes to why people like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King fought so hard to achieve what they did.... Admittedly no one ever put a burning tire around my neck, or ever attempted to hang me from a tree, but all the same, sheep shagger jokes can be quite hurtful. :frown:

I grew up in Middlesex (headstone lane) from 1943-1951. My gran came over from Germany after the war. She just had the clothes on her back. As a young child i sometimes was called a 'filthy Nazi' even though my mum was English.

The anti-German sentiment was understandable even though most Germans were war victims also

For all his depravity, he apparently wasn't overtly racist, he didn't mind if the children were black or blue.
