My husband....who doesn't understand why I spend so much time on BE.....has a question.

Is it possible to get a good curry in Canada....Nova Scotia in particular? When have been over there we have had lost of good Oriental food but he is concerned that he will never have a lamb madras or a chicken tikka marsala ever again.

Any curry lovers out there got a recommendation please?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but sorry no you wont find a good curry.

I have had a couple of curries since I arrived and none of them have been even close to the same standard as a good curry from Brick lane in London.

I'm coming across on Monday and have just posted myself a load of spices that I bought in the UK, also bought Madhur Jaffrey's Ultimate Curry Bible.

By no means a master chef but the recipes are really easy and the currys are amazing! If you can't find a curry house and you've got the shops to buy the spices why not make you're own?

A bit tricky to find the spices if you're outside the major cities, innit? I've mailed all sorts of stuff to people in Halifax in support of making meals with flavour.

Mamtas kitchen curry is an excellent website with thorough recipes telling you every step and the result is a perfect indian meal, unlike the 2 curry houses in Peterborough

I'm afraid I haven't been to either so I can't recommend them but its a start!

I think this is another one of those "Britisms". I bet there are lots of good Indian restaurants in Halifax. The food might not be identical to the food in your favourite restaurant in England, but that's not to say that it isn't good Indian food. I would think it would depend on whereabouts in India the respective chefs came from.

We have a new Punjabi restaurant here. It goes without saying that the owners are from the Punjab. My older son and I like the food, as does my husband. My younger son doesn't. It's all a matter of taste and the region the food comes from and whether you like that particular region's food or not.

The chef at the Taj Mahal in Halifax seems to be a white guy called Sam. The restaurant seems to be allied to another with a cajun theme. I doubt we're talking ferocious authenticity.

The one I've taken to going to in Brampton makes no pretence of being authentic to India; the menu proudly says they have a sister restaurant in Hayes Middlesex which indicates that I'm their target market!

Like you I found most of the places here rank, but Karma in the SE on 130th Avenue is probably the better (long way for you to travel though just for a curry) All the punters are brits.... Still nothing like the UK though. I asked for a Peshwari Naan and the guy just looked at me blank..... and said "all you Brits do is ask for hot curries and Peshwari Naans, what is a peshwari naan" You would have thought that he might have seen a good business opportunity there....!

Feroucious autheniticity in that it tastes like food in India, or in that it tastes like what we brits are used too? "Indian Food" as we know and love it has very little in common with food in india.


As for the "curry village", if its anything like the one in Peterborough, dont get your hope up.

I would expect neither, it looks as if it's a unit of General Foods; one Red Lobster, one East Side Mario's, one Taj Mahal, to be installed in every town.

We've been to Curry Village a few times. Chikken Tikka Masala is good. But I prefer the Butter Chicken -- yummy

Btw, there's a "Taste of India" in the food court in Scotia Square (downtown) - try it out. Have had the chicken curry there at lunch hours (they have a buffet system - for ~ $4.50!) - not bad for the money!

If you ever get out to Winnipeg, try "The Clay Oven" on Inkster Ave, the food is better than any curry I've had in the UK. It achieves what is normally considered an impossibility, it gets those from India in for meals, and they are considered people who do not eat out a great deal.

Its just east of Keewatin on Inkster,.

Looks like the Curry Village is on our to do list. I like the sound of the place in Winipeg, do they deliver to Nova Scotia???

I have this fantastic book I received as a gift. Try the mushroom and coriander it's delicious. I made the salmon curry before I left Leicester for some friends originally from Pakistan and she asked me for the recipe!!
