Default Going back to school!!!

Hi all,

I have just received course material from Canada(CIP Insurance) for a long distance course for my occupation, which hopefully if I pass will give me an added boost as far as work when we get to Canada!

Has anybody gone back to studying after a long gap, ie marriage, kids etc and able to offer any advice/tips?

I feel a long headache coming on!

Thanks

I have - well kind of . I qualified as a nurse in 1996 then had a study break until 2001 ( in this time i got married and had 2 kids) I then went back to uni to get my degree - did 2 years ( APEL'd my nursing towards it) got BA(Hons) Health and Nursing Studies. Then had another break from 2003 to 2007 went back to uni for 6 months and did my Nurse Prescribing qualification. Then went back fulltime in Sept 2007 to do my Nurse Practitioners degree - but have just pulled out due to moving to Canada

In between I have also got diploma's in aromatherapy, body massage, alchohol and drug counselling and witchcraft and the Oldways ( dont ask lol) . ooooh and Sign language level 1

All in all i suppose you could say I like learning

I find it much easier being back in Uni as an adult - I have alot more patience and seemt o be able to study easier, i think it helps alot when you are interested in what you are doing.

You' ll be fine

Yep.

I went back to uni after having two kids as my previous career was not family friendly. I'm about to complete a degree in speech and language therapy.

I've really enjoyed the course and have found that the main advantages of being a mature student is that, this time, I am focused and interested in what I'm doing.

The drawbacks are being treated like a kid by a lecturer who is ten years younger than me, and having to suffer the spoon fed kids who ask "Will this be in the exam?" at regular intervals!

Its a challenge to fit in the reading etc around home and work commitments. You will yearn for the time when you didn't have test/essay looming ahead of you; but, It will be worth it when you get the satisfaction of a few good grades and the fact that you are achieving something worthwhile.

Good Luck.

Sure did and I am proud to say I was an honours student this year

Very draining studying full time and being a full time mum, but very satisfying as the kids and the husband are proud of me, as I am of myself. It's good to show our daughters, that life doesn't stop after kids. My mum went back to school too, so I remembered her doing it.........hopefully though Miss Miggins will get the school bit first and then do the kids bit as it's easier I am sure!

All the best and I look forward to hearing hwo it goes for ya!

I agree that we are setting a good example for our daughters, however, fortunately, they don't see me pulling an all nighter before my finals

I also think that mature students get to socialize with a whole new social group which is great when you are weary of the school gate mafia .

We are also in an excellent position to help them with their studying skills as its still fresh in our heads!

Huge pat on the back for us
