Default Getting to Dublin

We are planning a trip to England in the fall and want to get over to Ireland while there. Would it be better to take a rental car over on the ferry or return it, get another flight over, and pick up another car on the other side?

I've tried looking on the web and there seems to be too many choices for the ferry. And it looks expensive too.

Any advice?

Of course taxes are 2 and a half times the ticket price. But still cheap.

I think you'll find it'll be hideously expensive to hire a car for an extended period of time if they know you're taking it to the Republic of Ireland, unless it's hired in Northern Ireland. However there you still have to get to Ireland from England. Best just to fly to Dublin and hire a car there if you feel you really need it.

How easy is it to get around without a car? We're planning on touring around. Want to visit friends on the west coast.

We hired a car from Dublin airport. And then drove to Galaway Bay on the west Coast, it took us roughly 2 hrs.

In Ireland without a car? Very tricky outside the main cities.

Oh its doable - i live there and don't have a car!

but if you want to hire one, it would mkae things easier. Not worth it for dublin though..you'll just get gridlocked.

fly and hire.

As above! Dublin City itself is very walkable & there's plenty of public transport should you need it. If you wanna see beyond that, then yes, hire a car and take in some of the most beautiful scenery around. That's if you can see straight after all the

Ive just come back last weekend and cars are very cheap to hire. Make sure you take out the insurance that brings the deductable back to zero or as near as. At the moment they usually add in the CDW in the price but the deductable is usually around 800 euro if you have bang, scratch or scrape. Its such a rip off having to take out insurance on insurance. Bringing the deductable down to zero will cost you about €10 a day. Our car for 5 days cost about £100 all in.
