Not used them on that route, but have flown them extensively within Europe. Very good airline, good service, well trained crews :)

With bmi the trans-Atlantic stuff is fairly new, so they are trying to get people to use the route, I honestly think thats the only reason its cheap :)
I agree, I'm very suspicious of cheap flights :sneaky: and fussy who I fly with, but I'd go with them with no doubts at all.

i generally fly from glasgow-heathrow-ottawa and use bmi on the gasgow-heathrow stage....always find them excellent, but then they are members of the star alliance,so a certain standard should be expected

On a lot of their routes they Code share with Air Canada. It might be that its actually an Air Canada flight. Check out the air Canada site - if they have a flight at the same time then Chances are It is an air Canada one. I know that some people don't like them but I've always found AC to be excellent. I don't line flying and the Crew have always been fantastic.

Re: Fly BMI?

I have just looked on the BMI website and have been quoted £1300 for 2 return flights on 31st Aug until 14th Sept. Only £600 more than flying with Canadian affair on exactly the same days although from Gatwick not heathrow. The BMI flight is actually an Air Canada flight. I have used Canadian affair twice in the last year and the service was top notch for a budget airline.

All BMI flights to Canada are on Air Canada planes.

Air Canada ('cos as Souv points out all BMI flights to Canada from UK are actually AC Codeshares) are pretty adept at changing prices in time with the market demand/season etc. So 'offseason' such as Oct their prices are usually pretty good.

Re: Fly BMI?

This may not be a viable option but flyzoom from Belfast direct to Halifax are usually very competitive - although you would have to look at a cheap connection from london to Belfast, which can be found on sale time with easyjet bmibaby flybe etc. Just a thought:D

Ahhh Northwest.... they were still using 727s up until a few years ago, and I STILL regularly see their old DC-9s droning out Dorval....

Codeshare flights on other airliners are easy to spot. They usually have a 4 digit number that relates to the actual carriers 2/3 digit flight number. (E.g.: BA 95, Finnair 5995)

Ah yes NWA and their "big grey battleships" as I used to call them. Used to scare the cr@p out of me along with AA's MD11's  They always looked like they needed to flap their wings to takeoff!!!!!!

Saying that AC don't have a very new fleet. BA sounds good especially if they are flying the 777 on the route.

Yes a little bit of a plane spotter before anyone asks, think it comes from living 5 mins from LGW (until I moved), spending 7 years working for airlines and having an Uncle who is an air traffic controller :p

Not always a codeshare indicator. Our holiday flight to Cuba was on ACXXXX. It was an AC plane with AC crew. Just not a regular, scheduled AC route.

I've only been on one once (BA about 8 years ago). Very nice.

Huge engines.

not a spotter but I too live nr Gatwick and pass daily under the take off/landing paths, 777's are lush, much nicer than 747s imo, although a 747 thundering at 200 feet over your head is quite a sight, i normally fly BA so will probably go with them

First experience of a 777 was when AA flew in on a test flight (even though the pilots were on strike! it was about the only one of our aircraft in that day!) remember how HUGE it seemed. First time I flew on it was 2 weeks later in First class LOVELY

Think you just get bitten by the bug when you live so close to a major airport and as you say having a 747 coming into land right over your car does make you take notice!

Flew BA YYC-LHR-YYC in Jan this year and had no problems with them.

I flew on a JAL one to and from Japan last year, very nice. Great facilities, comfy seats and wonderful onboard entertainment system. Having an entire row of three to myself so I could stretch out was nice as well. Great plane, one of the reasons I picked that flight as I hadn't been on a 777 before.

Now just waiting to fly somewhere on an A380.

Not many people know this but the 777 owes its existence to a very large extent to an extremely obscure metal called rhenium.

Mmmmm, more the engines than the plane itself, and it's used in engines that can be mounted on other planes as well these days.

Well, yes. A large twin-jet could not really have been built in the mid-1980s as the available superalloys weren't up to the job. It only became possible when some anorak (at P&W, I think) found that upping the rhenium content of the alloy allowed for far higher performance. The RB-211s typical of 747s knock out up to 60,000lb of thrust. Some types of the Trent and its competitors deliver over 100,000lb. Stick early 1980s alloy into a Trent and the turbine blades would melt, which is probably not a good thing.

Mate of mine back home is shortly going to Rolls to build aero engines. It'll be a lot different from building Toyota's and Fords I imagine.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

according to the website you can check 3 bags up to 32kgs each with total weight of all 3 not exceeding 69kg per person
prices obviously are according to season and demand
for instance, if you wanted to fly this weekend it's just £95 (plus taxes etc) per person each way for their tourist class but £2010 (plus taxes) per person each way for executive first!! :D

I'm not quite that sad. I had cause to research into this stuff a couple of years back. I still remember some of it.

Executive First (equivalent to some other airlines Business Class) is one of those classes that tend to be booked closer to the time of flying, so booking it way in advance means you get quite decent prices. For instance for when we are flying in August our tickets were £608 +extras each, compared to £518 +extras each for normal cattle class. An extra £90 +extras each, and we get much much more luggage and very nice seating and attention. No contest really. I've seen people pay £300 for tickets then £250 - 300 extra for excess luggage when they could have paid a couple of extra quid and gone a higher class of ticket which would have included that extra luggage and been more comfortable.

must admit i didn't take too long looking for different dates, but that's good to know about advance booking! we'll definitely be looking for an upgrade when we finally book our one-way tickets :D

BMI, from my experience, is good . Really surprised that they are now flying to Halifax- hadn't heard of it so thank you for letting us know. Do they do upgrades, like Zoom-and not like Air Canada?

Scroll back through this thread. BMI does not fly to Canada. It sells tickets for flights to Canada, certainly, but the aircraft will be Air Canada.

Oops - sorry- what a shame, though I must say the Air Canada flight attendants are nice but the planes are so old and worn. Ah well- we will have to keep going with Zoom and Icelandair instead.:)

I noticed Air Canada went cheap with the seat-back TV option on their 330's.... didn't think their planes were that bad though. They are replacing them with 777/787s, but it's going to be a while (years) before you see them on the Transatlantic routes.

walkerv05 Jun 5th 2007 10:02 am

Re: Fly BMI?

we have flew with Air transat they where Ok but the other planes they use are Thomas Cook have a wopping 35'' pitch as standard on all flights my OH can sit in comfort instead of having his knees up under his chin!!
great service cheap flights we have paid as little as £49 each way Manchester to Toronto although the flight tax ect may be twice that price added on but better than adding it onto a larger ticket price,

Air Canada currently has two 777s in it's inventory, both of which now operate on the Heathrow - Toronto route. They seem to be operating on a 2:1:0 pattern (where 2 fly one day, 1 the next and 0 the next) due to the vagaries of transatlantic flying, timezones and airport opening hours. If you look at the Air Canada site for booking this route you will see then come up on some flights.

Re: Fly BMI?

I always presumed BMI was expensive as everytime I tried to look up routes, you need a mortgage just for the taxes and fees. Seriously though I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Canadian -affair based in London. I have travelled on their direct routes for a few years and had no real problems. It's charter but hey you get what you pay for. Not sure if they still provide Heathrow to Halifax though and usually only in service May - Oct.
