Film suggestions?

I can't watch American or Canadian films I find them all shite, so I would ask you good people if you know of any good recent films that are set and made in the UK, about UK subjects, with UK actors that are out on DVD?

Cheers in advance,
Reg.

Have you seen any films by Shane Meadows such as Dead Man Walking or A room for Romeo Brass.
His films are usually set around the Midlands.
He is from Staffordshire.
Really good films to watch.

Yes, a mini series. But quite good I thought - but only if you know the story its based on.

Hot Fuzz - really good, funny British film, starring Simon Pegg.

He is also in Shaun of the Dead and Run Fat Boy, Run. These films all make me howl with laughter. Not to some people's tastes but deffo ours.

Edited to add that sorry didn't realise you were asking for recent films. If you've not seen them then they are worth a look anyway. ;o)

You need to get out more. To suggest that ALL American movies are shite is balderdash. You're functioning with a closed mind.

Re: Film suggestions?

Inglorious Basterds (2009) - Clever and witty war-comedy by Q. Tarantino, set in France; German/French/Italian/English dialogue. Stars the ebullient Austrian Christoph Waltz.

The Proposition (2005) - Satiric western set in the Antipodes. Stars three poms (Pearce , Watson, Winstone). Written by some guy in a Cave . . .

The Descent (2005) - Refreshing horror flic from Geordie writer/director Neil Marshall. One of the best anti-chick-flicks with chicks I've seen since Russ Meyer's Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) - Brutal/beautiful Irish film (dir. Ken Loach). Examines Brit colonialism circa 1920's Eire. Barry Ackroyd's cinematography is memorable.

Hamlet 2 (2008) - "It's a slippery slope... beer, liquor, dope, coke, meth, chicks with dicks, then jail!" Set in USA - but play is set in Denmark. Deadpan Steve Coogan does a send-up of a failed actor-cum-drama teacher. Stages his own play with HS kids: Hamlet 2.

Dead Snow (2009) - Enjoyable gore-fest Norweigian zombie pic by Tommy Wirkola. Quite impressive for the genre. Include NAZIS as protagonists (q.v. Inglorious Basterds) .

You are right, but I prefer to characterize it as discerning rather than closed mindedness. When it comes to films or music I know what I like and I've got too much to do to ponce about watching stuff I think is crap, just to feel well rounded. :)

That, I understand, but there are many great, well made American movies, which, if you are not watching, you're losing out. As you pointed out further up the page there are crap and mediocre British movies which you have watched, but presumably you didn't know that until you watched them..

Weak characterisation though and you need to know the basic history of the period before watching it. It offers no explanation of who these "Black and Tans" and "Staters" are nor why they're at each other's throats. I found I needed to use the subtitles (French) that came with the film not to understand the Irish characters but for the "Brits" who were from Scotland or the north. I suppose you know that calling an Irish film "set in the UK" is taking a position I wouldn't go near.

All that said, the only bleaker film I can think of is Baisse-moi.

24 hour party people is good. I used to work at the Midland Hotel where the Hacienda was years ago. We used to go there often. Hard to believe its become something of a cult place.
