Id just sneak a real tree in and plead ignorance if challenged myself if I wanted a real tree.

Our fake tree came from Canadian Tire, it was pretty cheap, and we've been using since I arrived in 98. Its the decorations that count, not the tree isnt it?

I like your thinking......we may well do that! And yes, the decorations are the key.....I've collected mine over many years and wouldn't part with them! Just as well, I dread to think how much it would cost to completely start afresh!

Perhaps you're remembering how nice your tree looked decorated and comparing it to a naked one.

Try the thrift shops! We brought our fake tree - (little one bought in B&Q) in our container as it took up so little space. The first year here, got all traditional and shlepped over a field of trees to cut down our own one, got boggy feet, wet clothes and dragged this tree back to car, then load it on the roof and once home decorated it. We were so proud of our Canadian tradition and invited neighbours around for some drinks. They took one look at it and laughed and called it a "Charlie Brown" ! We never heard the expression.

Next year looked for a better one in the field. Must support local see! Next year, gave that up and at "SallyAnn" found a really nice fake one which was rather large but as we did not have too much furniture family room it was ok. Finally took this back to thrift shop this year after 5 years of not using it as are now using our most favourite little B&Q special!

On this Christmas tree post, OH came home from local big box hardware store and said there is a Christmas tree there that "talks" to you when it senses your movement, asks if you want to hear a song, how are you? etc - I laughed so much - what next! No it is not coming into my house

That made me chuckle FB! All the time your little B&Q jobbie was 'the one'.

The thought of a Christmas tree that sings every time someone(thing) goes by would drive me round the bend. I hate those kind of things. That'll be in the post Christmas bargain bucket, you'll see :)

I suppose there must be a few countries, in say, sub-Saharan Africa, where people outnumber trees, but luckily they don't celebrate Christmas.

Not a problem then.

Edit: Oh, I'd just like to add that since Christmas is a total fake, a similar tree (or non at all) is appropriate.

Bah humbug, Novo, you little cracker!

I am fake, through and through, can't bear the thought of the bloody needles...having followed the RivingtonPike school of relocation, I wrestled a two metre fake jobbie with me, and am glad I did because they are damned expensive here. I'm with you on the iPad Dotty, pecking away like a demented chicken is NOT an aid to effective communication. I AM going to investigate a can of essence of Christmas Tree!

Thanks chaps! You're all so helpful. Seems like I just have to watch out for a bargain. I may have missed the Bay offer though as I can't face asking my OH to go out straight after work to buy a tree. Shame that but thanks for the heads up though Miss C :). Looked on the Walmart site and can't find any trees at all! Me thinks I'm having a technophobe moment. Will try again in a bit....thanks for that info Deeny:)

Incidentally, I haven't spotted any signs for real Christmas trees for sale and was just talking to my friend on Vancouver Island and she's noticed the same. Is buying real trees frowned upon? I can't for one minute think that could be the case in a country where trees outnumber people!

Lots of places around here have the real trees inc. the grocery stores, random parking lots, just not yet!
Ikea is the cheapest usually.

Just lay in some supplies and get a tree and call it Walpurgisnact then. To the OP, why not just get a Christmas Bough, looks nice, smells nice, won't get you evicted, and in Mid-January/February start checking the Salvation Army thrift stores, and if there are none there go garage sailing in summer and you will find the artificial tree of your dreams for $10 - $15, likely more nice ornaments than you need as well.

Have the Zellers stores finished changing over to Target there yet? Target was always good for that sort of stuff in the States (at least compared with what we got in our neck of the woods). Failing that, if you are thinking of throwing caution to the wind this weekend and having a jaunt to Buffalo to cash in on the Thanksgiving Day shoppers madness, you might look there.

Re: Fake Christmas Trees

I had an arguement wth my tree yesterday (pre lit crappy tire jobby) and obviously the last 3 years of throwing it up into the shed for storage and hauling it down without a great deal of care - caused the middle section to be un-pre-lit, therefore after f****g 3 hours of trying to sort out the problem I picked the whole thing up and threw it as far as I could. (not too far its 7ft tall and quite heavy)

Obviously it broke some more but god it felt good

Can you get Walpurgisnacht trinkets, maybe a nice Baba Yaga, at Walpurgismarkt?

There speaks a person with easy access to an Ikea!!! Bitter! No, not I! ...except for the odd day and the months with a consonant in them.
