After a recent trip back home I acquired a taste for Doom Bar, anyone have ideas of something similar here?

I love Doom Bar along with lots of other real ales. There is a beer that comes from PEI called Peakes quay ale. No idea if its available where you are but that is the nearest thing I can think of.

I think you should use this as an excuse to sample many many North American beers

Doom Bar is, imo, vastly overrated. It's not bad beer, but I don't understand all the rah-rah-rah about it.

...until you remember that Sharp's Brewery, who make Doom Bar, was bought over by Molson Coors! So I suspect that the emergence of Doom Bar is a triumph of the marketing department rather than of the actual mediocre Cornish beer itself.

On the plus side, as it's owned by M-C then it's probably not beyond the realms of possibility that it's available "here", if here means Canada.

Agree with Jings. Have had Doom Bar a couple of times but never found it anything special.

Ive heard of this ale but never actually tried it....someone told me it was Cornish lager? Is it an ale or a lager?

I am a huge cask/real ale fan, its one of the things I miss in Canada....(a very worthy thing of missing I feel)

My favourite real ale in the UK is HPA Hereford Pale Ale....a true easy drinking session ale, although as my avatar implies I am a Bathams fan, but that's not usually available across the whole of Britain.

Have to try this Doombar next time I am in the UK.

Real ale people are just a bunch of hooray Henrys just trying to be posh and stuff and going "ooh ooh ooh isn't this ale marvellous Julian?" Give me cold, yellow and fizzy any day of the week.

In terms of 'real ale' the Muskoka Brewery Mad Tom on cask is lovely.

Doom Bar is just that... a rather insipid session ale. Pleasant enough on a warm day, but definitely nothing special imo. But it's one of those local beers that's being increased in volume and sold nationally, and marketed cleverly. I would take London Pride over Doom Bar every day of the week.

That's not currently an option in Ontario. I've been forced to drink Wellington Arkell which, by the taste of it, is rotting me teeth.

I know, that's why I have my son and daughter scouring LCBO outlets and buying up what is available. None in NS either so it's got to be Fullers London Pride which isn't so bad. At least I'll get my regular supply of ESB over the winter.
The Bedford brewery Wells suds aren't too bad. Bombardier is worth a try. I think it's named after the former long time amateur pugilist and pride of Wandsworth, "Bombardier" Billy Wells. I don't think it packs quite the same punch as good old Billy did though.
