Curveball Interview questions

The planes engines do not drive the wheels, they are there simply to enable the plane to move. The engine pulls or pushes the plane through the air and, when sufficient air is moving over the wings, enough lift will be generated for the plane to take off. Ask yourself this question: How does a plane move through the air once it has taken off?

fwiw the previous thread (from which I directly plagiarised the question) is here http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=493851
I do like that mythbusters piece, though.

well yes, of course. But the previous thread went on for 15 pages after the question had been answered definitively in the first half-dozen or so posts. People couldn't get their heads around the fact that the wheels are free-rotating and the whole conveyor belt is therefore a red herring.

I can't believe the pilot was surprised it was able to take off. I thought they were supposed to be clever buggers

Ok get it now. The wheels are irrelevant.
