I'm wondering if it depends on where you are.. :) As for neighbors I think it depends on the type of housing one is in. If your in a house in a neighborhood likely see your neighbors and get to know who they are and spend more time outside where you actually might run into a neighbor. Where in an apartment your not as likely to see your neighbors all that often, and well neighbors tend to not be long term in apartments or condos with high rental % as people move in and out on such regular basis so less long term people, and no outdoor chores so your not exactly outside where you would come across a neighbor like you might in a house with yard work, and space to spend outdoors vs being indoors all the time at home. Despite more people living within close proximity such as condos and apartments, I think this type of living keeps people apart more since there is limited or no outdoor space for people to hangout at while at home, so you spend most of the time at home inside your unit. |

That sounds terrible. Is there anything I can do to help you get over that?

Pretty much my experience too.
Saying that I can sympathize with OP. I don't think anyone is deliberately lying or being two faced, but I find that meeting people that you don't know that well can feel a bit like you are making small talk with a realtor. There's a certain guarded politeness that can grate a little until you realize that you don't have to care about these people so ultimately who gives a shit? You either get to know them better or you don't. |
Re: A culture of lies and two faced talk
I have found a lot of very friendly, unbelievably helpful people here, and some that have been disappointing and not followed through with their promises. I found the exact same thing in England.
When I am feeling positive about the move here I only remember the good people, when I am feeling down, I only remember the disappointments here. In short, I think your opinion that an entire nation is stocked with two faced liars, may say more about how you are feeling about your decision to move here than it does about them. |

Here's a bit of help from a Canadian. If it's so awful why not piss off to somewhere else? You know, somewhere full of non-Canadians.

I think if I went on a forum for Canadian Expats in the UK and read the constant unpleasant, negative whining about an entire nation and it's people that we get on here, I would be very insulted and angry. But actually I think it's a British thing to be so negative, and some just think they are clever/ funny! |

I guess where we live we're by and large in the lucky camp. We have our usual crop of "oh we must meet up" and then nothing happens. But to be honest, we all lead busy lives and we are at least as guilty of doing this as anybody else around here. Our surrounding neighbours will do - and have done - so much for us. One taught me chainsaw safety, fixed our electric garage door, put up a rope swing in his own garden for our kids because he had the right sort of branch overhang. Another neighbour taught me how to sweep our chimney and helped me to fix the roof on our rather large woodshed. Another gave our girls a whole bunch of beautiful herb plants so they could start their own herb garden.I like the people that surround me. Even nicer, as the relative newcomers (and foreigners), they appear to like us too.
